Adding weight to frontend

My speedster really needs some weight up front to keep it from bouncing around on small bumps. My question is how much should i add? 100 lbs?

Maybe not. If you are running front tire pressures higher than 22 or 23 psi try lowering your tire pressures. I'm running 23 front and 28 rear with gas shocks and 19mm anti- sway bars with no problems (IRS rear, ball-joint front).

Mike, All rear engine cars feel different than front engine cars. Have you watched any of the endurance races on Speed Channel? The 911 race cars tend to bounce more than normal, and they are set up for maximum road holding. But to give your car more front weight bias I would put a full size spare, jack, tools, and maybe a 16 gal. gas tank. At least all this stuff is useful. JMHO

I have not added weight, but know others have. First look at your other options, including using light (cheap) shocks up front and tire pressure adjustment.

If you want a little more front axle weight, consider attaching a lead pipe with shotgun shot and two cap ends to the bottom tube or your front end. It may be as simple as using two adjustable stainless steal pipe clamps. Let us know what you do.

You can also install a 15 gallon Vw gas tank to gain some extra weight with increased fuel capacity. The common fix is with air pressure and non-gas shocks for the Vw chassis McSpeedsters.

My IM had 160 lbs of lead added in the form of two ingots bolted to a piece of plywood up in the trunk just ahead of the gas tank. If you ask me that is way too much and a very poor place to put it...too high. I removed them, lowered the tire pressures and set the top adjuster on the beam a little higher than the lower one (less pre-load?) and it seems to feel right to me.

I use a full spare, jack, wrench/spares bag, & this winter will go with the large gas tank. Jim OKC
