advice for transmission

Here's the question....and you might want to delete the other thread. With a low revving (5000 or so rpm peak?) 1914, I would either stay with the 4.12 ring & pinion and stock gears - 3.78 1st, 2.31 2nd, 1.31? 3rd and .89 4th. You could install an aftermarket 1-2 mainshaft and gears, but they run about $500 or so just for the parts. The other way to go would be to change the r&p to a 3.88 (would solve the low 1-2 gear issue), but your 1914 won't develop enough torque to cruise comfortably with the .89 4th without overheating, so a 4th gear change to a .93 would work, getting you back to a final drive of about the same as before. The .93 is the 4th gear VW used with the 3.88 in production transaxles.

My Beck Spyder got a freeway flyer Street Pro...with .84 fourth and 3.88 r/p....

If I were to do it over again, I'd leave fourth at  .94 to keep from having to dive into 3rd too often in the mountains...

I would go with the 3.88 R&P gear& depending on how much & what kind of driving you do will determan what 4th gearm to use. I didnt like the 388 with the .82(Ithink) with my small motor (1874) but the 3.88 with the .93 was just about right, but with  my big motor I would rather have the .82  if I couldent go 5 speed. then that would be 5th gear.

Mark, .82 is what I have and with the 4.12 R & P it is a true overdrive.  I have ample torque to drive that combo and am well-pleased with the performance.  It's almost like having a 5 speed in my estimation.
