I'm an avid Jeep person but I think the roots are in the no roof lifestyle. My wife has always admired the porsche and I recently found one relatively close to our home in Charleston. She is in school for the next few years and I thought it would be a good hobby for me in the meantime. Below is the car I found and i was wondering if you had any thoughts on this one in particular.

I know its hard to tell from the photos but the guy said that it runs and we are thinking of going up there this weekend to take it for a spin.

any thoughts/advide would be great. I actually know a really good mechanic (locally that works out of his garage) if it needs any engine work but I would want to do a lot of the custom exterior stuff myself.

Josh - I live in Mount Pleasant and would be glad to discuss Speedsters with you. You're welcome to go for spin in mine as an intro to Speedsters.

The one that you provide the link to looks like it sits 4-6 inches higher than most. That makes me question the build. With CMCs, the build quality varies depending on how much the builder knew about what he was doing. Some are great (anything by Alan Merklin), while others are iffy. You may do better getting a car that's at least partially factory built (Vintage, JPS, Beck, etc.). That said, if it's really close it's worth the drive just to look at.

Don't rush into the first one you find just because it's close. Shop around. Better to have one of the guys on this forum check it out for you and then get it shipped. Also, Ken Erwin (Air-Cooled Automotive up in Summerville) is an excellent VW resource and does top quality work for reasonable prices.
