Has anyone added some type of AC unit to the your Speedster? I am thinking some type of older VW unit. I understand that it isn't going to do much for cooling. But I live in Phoenix and I literally use my Speedster as a daily drive for 8 months a year. With the top up and some air flow, it would be completely drivable during the summer months.

Adding a/c has two unintended consequences: 1) it uses available engine h.p., thus removing some power to the drive shaft, and 2) since it makes the engine work harder, it raises engine temps. This doesn't mean that you can't do it, but it does mean that your engine needs to be running well, and have some extra energy to power the a/c compressor. Thus, engine age and size are important. You may need to add additional cooling to your engine, such as an external oil cooler, if you don't already have one.
I suggest that you contact the local car club or air cooled hobbyists in your area. Someone in the Phoenix area will have done this conversion. They will know which brands, shops, mechanics, etc. supply good service to those in your locale. Best of luck!
I would also stay from any "older VW unit" because, basically, they suck.
Look into a system from Vintage Air. Tell them you want the same thing they sell to Special Edition/Beck. They are far more efficient than any older VW unit.
CALL JPS AND FIND OUT WHAT UNIT THEY PUT IN MY CAR AS IT WORKS REALLY WELL AND I FEEL NO IMPACT ON THE ENGINE
I concur with Gerd. My JPS AC works great and it doesn't seem to affect power much at all.
