so you think you know air cooled? i'll bet not. if anybody here has ever heard of an engine where the cranck shaft does not crank, but is instead stationary, and the rest of the engibe rotates, i'll eat my distributor.

Yeah, some radial airplane engines were like that, I believe. I would think that carburetion would be a real challenge.

Correct Sir; many WWI fighter planes had such an engine and ran at a constant rpm, the pilot controlled the speed of the engine with a kill button.

Rotary engine indeed and sometimes confused with the radial engine. The rotary engined planes did a sharp turn really well in one direction. The rotating mass of the engine was terrific.
Yeah, terrific... Unless you failed to maintain sufficient right rudder while on the ground and so scooted in a loop and crashed, or screwed up the mixture adjustment just a little on takeoff, and corkscrewed her into the ground.
I guess that only killed--what?--400 guys?
Thats what made many WW1 fighter pilots great they learned that turning the plane one way it was smooth yet the other way and it was torque city. It killed as many as it saved. Rookie pilots had a hard time performing a spin recovery especially when you were not expecting it. The sad part is it still happens today especially on twin engine aircraft, they turn on the dead engine.
