Beautiful! I'm just getting a good start on mine, hope it turns out as nice.
Do you have more progress pictures and details?
Looking good! Tell us more about it?
That looks perfect. The wides, the wheel, the color. That's all just right. NICE!
It looks excellent, Tab! Great job.
What's left to be done?
Thanks guys,
It started out as a CMC built on a 1970 IRS pan. Black with red interior in worn shape and needing attention, the floor was soft, the engine leaked oil like crazy, first gear ground, the interior was shot, the body was cracked, chipped and just looked rough.
I tore it completely apart, rebuilt the engine. 1600 with a 110 cam.34 ICT weber carbs, EMPI exhaust, and a 009 distributor. The transmission was rebuilt with new syncros and gaskets and seals. New starter, clutch etc.
I welded new floors in and repaired the CMC butt sag. The suspension was a major bit of
work. First I converted the front to the wide 5 wheels and brakes, I then moved the front beam forward 2 5/8 forward to correct the wheel fitment in the wheel arch. I had to extend the steering column and extend the brake lines. the front beam is adjustable and it was lowered Then the rear suspension was lowered and the bearing housings cut off and moved 1 inch inward to allow the wide 5 wheels and brakes. New axles from a type 3 automatic trans were used and they fit perfectly!
The body was media stripped and the doors, deck lid and trunk where removed. The body was repaired with fiberglass and sanded, and sanded, and sanded until it was as close to perfect as we could get it. Then 4 coats of base coat paint, and 5 coats of clear. Wet sanded and polished. Tons of hours.
Most of the bright metal was replaced, or buffed. the interior was redone in saddle leatherette with oatmeal color carpet. The gauges are from a Porsche 356, but the tach is from a 912 because its electronic. The steering column is from a 60 beetle with a turn signal switch from a 58 beetle. The front of the floor boards are made of birch, to give you a sloped floor in the very front.
Everything that has air, gas, electric, or oil in it was rebuilt. I think I have 200-300 hours in the car thus far and just a few things left to do. Just the small details, the top, some snaps, alignment, speedster emblem, and luggage rack.
I hope the weather gets better soon so I can take it for a test run and shake it down before spring

i have a couple of questions about things I like on your car. Is the dash covering from VS?
Also your engine lid grille is a better grille than the CMC cast one. Where did it come from and did it require enlarging the opening? If so, how much?
The dash covering is just flat vinyl stock,I just pulled and formed the vinyl to fit the dash. The engine grill is from Stoddard. I had to enlarge the opening to fit
Spectacular.
I'd like to learn more about what you had to do to the rear end to make the wide 5's work. Seems like a fair bit of work.
Nice job, thus far.
Ted
yes I lost the lip in doing so. I made up some brackets to hold the grill from the bottom side
Judging from the photos and your name, I'm guessing you are 'in the business'.
That speedster is truly a gorgeous car.

Mango smoothie did a write up on narrowing the rear end, you can search it and it will answer all your questions
Thanks guys, Yes I run a repair shop and have been a porsche guy for over 20 years. I have owned over 30 porsche's but none have been as much fun as this speedster
Thanks for all your kind words and support

Okay, will do. I'm assuming it's only necessary if you're converting from 4 lug to wide 5 on the rear? and a wide five drum to wide five disk shouldn't be as difficult?
Thanks,
Ted

Nicely done, Tab! Likewise on P-cars. Was 25+ year member of PCA (Zone 8) and POC, our replica Speedster is most fun sports car I've owned! Best of luck to you!
I didn't get down to see you last summer and you weren't ready for the Telegraph Cruise in July. Are you coming to Carlisle in May?
well I hate to point this out about your car...I probably shouldent as nobody else has.Ill have to think on it for a while. I realy cant beleave you did that.
I think the car looks great, hope you join us in Carlisle this year. Great work!
Looks great to me! Love the classic exterior color.
All I can say is "Don't feed the trolls..."
Car looks fantastic. I'd be proud as hell to have a car half as nice.
Ted
Really nice looking car! Congratulations, first for your patience and tenacity and secondly on the car overall.
well hear it is. thats almost exzactly what I wanted mine to look like.how did you get into my head. oh so sweet.
Good on ya', Tab! Looks like you've done an excellent job, both technically and cosmetically. Keep up the good work. Now you get to drive that bad boy.
Thanks again for all the kind words and support. I got a few more items done today, its super cold and not much fun outside. So the speedster is lifting my spirits and making me smile. I'm hoping to go to Carlisle this spring
Oh about the color, Its the correct color for the year 1957 in the Porsche catalog Ivory is the color
Lookin' good. Bring her to Carlisle, you won't be disappointed!
So what is the weather like for Carlisle in may? I want to drive the speedster there but not in a rainstorm
Weather at Carlisle
May in Carlisle could be anything from picture perfect to a second Biblical flood. We've had it all.
The weather in May is probably similar to what you get you get in Ohio. We have had rain but probably more nice weather over the years.
I think im going to skip the Porsche meet in Hershey this year and see you guys at Carlisle ! Im driving the speedster !!!!!!
He has been assimilated into the Collective. Resistance was futile.
Autobahn - if you haven't seen this already, here's a video of last year's 10th Anniversary SOC gathering at Carlisle!
I've met a lot of really cool down-to-earth SOC folks whom I now consider my good friends. I'm from SoCal and fly back East for this event the past several years...too much fun! Hope to see you @ Carlisle 2014!
