NO, you don't need to replace your starter unless it's not working correctly.. Upgrading your alternator just means it will charge your battery faster.

CW usually means clock wise where as CCW means counter clock wise

ps if you have an air cooled VW and you want to change starters, use an IMI starter. It's a gear drive high torque starter and spins your engine much easier.
Larry,
I must have misread the ad for the AL82X as a 75 amp. I intend to install a quartz heater drawing 25 amps and a set of driving lights. I've been told in a previous post that the alternator I now have on this 2110cc engine is 45amps.
On cold startings this engine stumbles and spits until it's warmed up, and I usually have to crank it over three or four times. The third and fourth cranking gets sluggish.
I thought 75 amps would handle the add-ons, and a high torque starter would eliminate the sluggishness. Am I on the right track?
Yes, you're on the right path.

Here's an example of a high output alternator, others are available:

The IMI 101 (if you have a type 1 transaxle) high torque starters will eliminate the 'sluggishness'
