Couldn't resist successfully haggling over a set of rims at a tag sale: 15" x 4 1/2"  They're fake two piece with 30 allen headed bolts around the perimeter and weigh 6 lbs. less than my steel rims. (For just such a windfall I've been hoarding a pair of Michelin ZX 165's for the front and 175's for the rear)

These rims look good at 15 feet...and great at 25 feet!...(I like the matte non reflective aluminium finish)...but up close they have a mottled oxidized appearence.

I'm thinking of using a very fine steel wool with alcohol as a cutting agent to restore them.

Any experience, opinions, suggestions as guidence?

You're right Rich. I'm embarrassing inept at this keyboard.

My Rensselaer educated, computer engineering degreed, son has a couple of times verbally walked me through the mysteries of files, photo sizing and downloading...Unable to retain any of it!!!

I'm a visual learner. I need a linear follow the dots graphic instructions.... Preferably with colored arrows.

Rich, a 'secret' is just that-----a secret

Bob G.    Unfortunately, my Diathrambus is a surplus but in excellent condition unit from the Alabama National Guard and for some reason their Quarter Master removed everything that wasn't necessary for it to accomplish its task.    I do know where you get the knurled flarble thou.   If you send me $250.00 I'll buy it for you and ship it next day air.

Larry:

That's just great! However, I only use Nigerian currency when making intrastate/ interstate/solid state financial transactions, so the money order from my Nigerian financial advisor/lifestyle coach should be to you reasonably soon.

In the interim, go ahead and buy the flarble ( I prefer the magnetized version) and send it to me. The Nigerian money order will include a hefty premium for your trouble!

Isn't this internet thing wonderful?

With some level of sincerity, your friend,

Bob

Bob,

I just received a message from the Nigerian Prime Minister and he assured me that the money has been transferred to my personal bank account after I supplied him the routing number, bank account number and my Social Security Number.

I'm anxiously awaiting the money transfer.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to make the purchase of the Magnetized Flarble as the company is closed on Sunday's.

Larry:

I just corresponded with my Nigerian financial advisor/lifestyle coach and it may take an extra week or so for him to send the money order. Seems he is in Dar es Salaam at the Speedster Coalition of Africa Meeting for the next few days investigating tread wear patterns of the various African made tires when driven on unpaved roads. Important research. He simply cannot be disturbed but promises to get right on this once the rough draft of the report is complete.

Don't let that slow you down in acquiring and sending me the magnetized flarble. I just didn't want you worried about being reimbursed.

My intentions are the best!

Still sincere, your friend

Bob

I'm on it boss,,,,   First thing Monday morning I'll drive the 387 miles to obtain the item in question.    (Did you want the magnetism to be polarized North - South or

South- North ???    Also, they offer it in Hot Pink or Military camoflauge colors (desert colors, not urban colors)   If you were from Canada or England, that would be colours not colors

Oh well then, the Prime Minister being my guys cousin has stepped in then, I see. They are so gracious in these matters.

I'll inform him that he need not rush in finishing his work for SCAM. I believe his cousin and most of his family are SCAMers as well. Good to know they stick together in what is a giant club even larger than our own SOC.

You might send me the same information you sent him so that I can stay on top of this for you.

Confident in positive outcomes! (Send the flarble today please).

Your even better friend now,

Bob

Polarized east-west and in the colour/color/hue/no metalflake please of your choice.

See if they will send it directly to me today so you don't have to make the 700 mile plus jaunt on my behalf. I trust that "they" will do as you ask.

Or, just provide me your credit card number, expiration date and three digit code from the back and I will eliminate all your concerns and order it myself.

Always looking out for your best interests.

Have you ever considered investing in single use wooden barbeque grills? I have become aware of an opportunity in China.... but we can talk another time.

Your new bestest friend,

Bob

Larry:

A man of your standing would have no problem convincing your source to act on this request today, post haste, now, immediately!

You need only e-mail them those pictures of your gun collection and target shooting trophies with a photograph of their home and address to motivate them to action.

Come on Larry, be resourceful!

Oh and oddly, I haven't gotten that e-mail yet. Please re-send.

Good working with you on this!

Bob

Hallelujah !!!...thanks people

Spent the afternoon cautiously testing 'restoration' suggestions on my faux two piece aluminium rims...

Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty (green) is the winner...hands down!!!

Thank you 19652+2... whoever you are

Cleared up the mottled oxidation to a uniform matte finish, easy-peacy, without leaving a shining 'chrome' appearance.

Now I'll have to feret out flat bottom lug bolts instead of the acorn shaped ones for cupped mounting holes.

Update on spiffing up mottled aluminium rims...

Using a combination of Bill's and Ron O's suggestions I discovered this afternoon that an initial scouring with SOS pads and WD40 as a lubricating/cutting agent greatly reduced the efforts of the shoulder muscles to do the final matte burnishing with the green sided Scotch-Brite pads.

I imagine there are other viable alternatives too...such as sending off a check to a retailer and bolting on a rim right out of the shipping carton that doesn't even need dusting!!!!
