My buddy has had his eyes on my Spyder for a while now. He’s missing his ever since his wife talked him into selling it and buying a GTS. He’s been buying every Speedster he can find hoping to lure me into a trade.
He just sent me this.

I know he’d trade me straight across, but I also know he paid <$36k for it. (He sent me the classified ad)

66 912 w/47,000.  Plus side: 5 speed, no sunroof (ie +2” headroom) Down side: 3 gauge, aftermarket seat covers

It’s getting harder and harder to spurn his advances.

Hussy!

Sweet car, but a totally different driving experience.  Do you want raw or refined?  Fast or, um, not so fast?

I’ve wanted a 912 ever since I sold my partially complete 69 project. I just never really had space for one with all my other cars and motorcycles.

And based on my experience with my 79 SC, I don’t know if I’d qualify a 66 912 as “refined.” It’s basically a Karman Ghia with a fancy body.

I like the 3-gauge dash, and no sunroof is a big plus. The 5-speed is an enormous plus. 912 seats are nothing special, especially when Pro Car seats are short money and look/fit nicely. I'm having a hard time believing that with 47k mi, the odometer hasn't rolled over once or twice.

What he paid is not particularly relevant, what it's actually worth has some bearing on the decision.

Is the paint original? And for the $60,000 question (probably literally) - describe (in one word) the rust situation.

None = do the deal
Some = it all depends if somebody has tried to cover it up
Body filler over "some" = pass

Your mileage may vary.

Yeah, but it’s getting harder to get in and out of it every year.

@Stan Galat Yeah, after my SC, I vowed if I ever bought a coupe again it would be a sunroof delete. I don’t know if it’s a delete on a 66 912, probably just an unordered option. Regardless, sunroof delete 911/912 are not only rare, but have 2” more headroom.
And I’m sure it’s 8/10ths. My buddy doesn’t mess around with projects. He’s basically a detailer. He buys cars that are one detail away from top dollar, and generally finds smoking deals on them.

But I might want to rescue it before he turns it into a 6. (He’s got a 69 just like it at a shop in LA getting a conversion done).

Biggest caution is the money Spyders are bringing right now, I’d be better off selling it and buying a 912 outright.

ps: Good point about purchase price vs worth. It seems like good 912s have been going $49k/$50K in the last year. I’m sure that what he’d sell it for.

I owned a 912E back in the sixties in SoCal. OK car, but kept going through valve guides.

It left along with my first wife and then I got a 911S.

I won in three ways.

E’s are nice because they have the TypeIV motor. Other than that, a SWB 66 is a way different car than a 76.

I wouldn’t mind a 76, but I love how much the first body style resembles a 356C.

My holy grail would be an Irish Green 69 soft-window targa, but with prices being what they are, that’s not gonna happen.

As I was mulling this all over, the flip side occurred to me: I paid $19.5 for my Spyder back in 2013. I’ve put about $5K into it. So the flip side is I’d be getting a 912 for ~$25.

I went through a year’s worth of BaT and PCMarket and while I remembered the $50-$60K Spyders, I was surprised that most either changed hands or failed to meet reserve about $40-$45.

I had a long talk with my friend tonight. The car was repainted from Irish Green (a sign from God?) and has a small hole rusted through the floorboard behind the pedals (He’s already ordered the patch panel)

After my conversation, and my totally exhilarating drive to the snow line in my Spyder, I’m less inclined to move forward. We’re going to go on a canyon cruise next week and I’ll see how I feel after looking it over and driving it.
