After testing and trials I have come up with a coating to make Amber front parking bulbs. They look real cool at night. And when the headlights are on there is no affect from them. Any interest? $5.00 a pair plus shipping.

Did you use the Duplicolor Anodized coating in orange?
http://www.duplicolor.com/products/metalcast.html
If you didn't . . . you should have ! ! Two coats inside the lens and one outside to add depth and gloss and DONE ! ! ! If you want a slightly darker amber, add a light coat of the Smoke color to the inside. Two coats for darker still.
The red works WONDERS for refurbishing the faded reproduction tail light lenses and fills scratches like a treat. Changes amber lenses to red, easily.
A can of red, smoke and orange and you're in the lens business for the rest of your life ! ! Men will envy and fear you, women will want you, and dogs will howl whenever you're near . . .
$3.99 a can at a Wallmart close to you.

TC ...This is the small bulb inside the headlight bucket. I use a metallic amber semi transparent coating. There is no way to coat the inside . The bulb is sealed.

Joe, where do I mail my check?
They do look great at dusk... also buy these at a Truck Stop
Alan, What's the size on the bulbs? I could never find the 67 bulb in amber? That's why I've gone through the trouble of making them.
Joe , they are now mounted in the Speedy headlights but believe that they are...the 67 I picked them up at a Pilot Truck Stop.
These have been in my car for more than a decade. Found them at a local parts store?
If they are no onger available, it's pretty cool that you made some. They look great.

Wonder how they would look if you chromed the insides of the headlight buckets? Anybody tried that?

No, but I DID silver leaf the insided of my tail lamp housings. They were getting a little tired looking. Worked great, and wicked cheap.
Probably use silver leaf on the headlight buckets as well . . .

Got imagery? I'm not sure I know what that process entails, but I'm willing to have a go.

Cory. I painted the inside of the buckets with Chrome paint that available at the local auto store. Just don't touch the painted surface for about two weeks. You'll get dull spots if you do touch it early.

Thanks, Joe!
I happen to have a spare pair of buckets, so I think I'll be heading on down to the Helpful Hardware Man. I'll be primering them first, I imagine?
TC, you've got first dibs on the old ones if this idea works.
BTW - Here is an ebay ad for the amber colored headlight bulbs. I can't use them in MD or VA -- as far as I know -- but here they are:

Pardon my ignorance, but what are Parking lights for? It seems kinda for silly to have headlights and these. Can someone explain the concept to me.
Ya use the parking lights when you go parking with your honey..this way you can see what you are do'in :)

If that cheesy "chrome in a can" thing doesn't work out for ya, try some white phosphorescent parking lot/marker spray paint. Glows like a son of a bit@h and really helps spread the light from the headlamps. Plus looks pretty much stock when the lights are off.

Todd, I generally relied on the parking lights to provide visibility for other drivers. It's better to have SOME light in the old headlight bucket so you can be seen by other drivers without having to run the headlights all the time.
Having said that, I'm a fan of driving with my lights on all the time, since a small silver car is harder to see than a motorcycle in today's SUV-dominated world.
There's another benefit, too. When your Bug-wired headlights go out, you've at least got a small bulb ahead of the reflector to throw some light out onto the roadway.
That help?
I'll be replacing my parking lights with amber bulbs and wiring them as turn signals, now that my wiring system and fuses are 100 percent predictable. That way, I can forget about the small beehives and clean up my front end.

Cory, I chromed my buckets and the result is outstanding. I'll get a pic of it and post it. they serve as my directionals and they show up even with headlights on.

Thanks again! Here's your photo in a format you can transfer to your file. Very helpful.
Todd, parking lights are/were? required to be illuminated in certain European countries if you're parked more than 30 meters away from a street light.
My old Mercedes had a switch which would illuminate either the right or left set of parking lights - depending on which side of the street you're parked on.

Good point Dave and it was also because the Euro streets were and are STILL typically very narrow so depending on how you parked you could set either the right or left side parking lights. That's how the term "Parking" lamp was started.

There was a very cool feature on my 928s where you could hit the turn indicator either right or left with the ignition off and the trailing edge light on the door would illuminate on the appropriate side -- to tell the guy who was about to wipe your door out that you were opening it, I suppose.
German dude showed me what it was; I would have never known.
