It's not cold ALL the time...and Winter hot tubbing is fantastic
Just for fun (I have a weird idea of fun… LOL), I re-read the "Disaster" thread. 640+ posts! I'd like to hand the Long-Distance Diagnosis Award to our friend @Fpcopo VS, who, less than eight hours after my motor failure, was the first to offer the absolutely correct reason for The Disaster. I have included his analysis…
Somehow, a bit of something DID get into the oil pump's gears and stop their rotation, just as @Fpcopo VS, the pride of Omaha, suspected. This was also the forensic finding by one of @PaulEllis' VW shop friends. There was no "backing out" of the pump's tang from the cam -- it was a sudden jam of the pump, resulting in the cam quickly grinding the tang down...
I hadn't noticed the quick and accurate analysis until now…
Congrats!

Hey thanks a lot Cory. It's kind of lonely way out here in the middle of the country so far from any of the action. Any how I'm glad I had a lucky guess and figured it out correctly. Once I had an old Caprice with a big block in it and all of a sudden the oil light started to come on at idle. We put a gauge on it and yep it was real low oil pressure and yes it happened suddenly. Turned out the car had a nylon coated timing gear and chunks of the nylon were coming off the gear. One of the chunks somehow got jammed in the pump bypass plunger and caused a huge internal pressure leak. We had to raise the motor and pull the pan to fix it. The was a small pile of nylon in the bottom of the pan that was getting sucked in the pump. The nylon was soft enough it didn't jam the pump and shear the drive like yours did. That was what made me think it had to be something really hard like a bolt or a chunk of metal. The best thing about this board is the wealth of knowledge and the number of people that will offer help. I have asked for help many times and the guys have responded with some really clever solutions. Anyhow, I'm glad everyone was able to offer assistance in your hour of need. You are really lucky to have a guy like Paul to help you so much. I'm sure if he needed your help you would have been there for him. Merry Christmas Everybody!
Merry Christmas!!!!
