As Mark said, that's Paul Harford's car, "Butch".
There has never been, nor will there likely ever be another car like this one. There will be other big engined "uber-speedsters" (Intermeccanica even builds 911 powered cars), as well as cars that are more refined, but this car is unique in every way.
It's built to resemble what a car driven and raced in the '50s and '60s would have looked like. There are dozens of little touches all over the car that refer to rallies and racing events from a bygone era. You have to see the "collector art" under the front bonnet to appreciate it- hundreds of keepsakes from 50 years worth of travel and racing sealed under a clear finish. There's a log book (some in German, I believe) that outlines an imagined history of the car, dating from 1958. There are old mechanical rally stop watches on the dash, a hula girl from the '50s up front. It's a replica, but the only car I've ever seen with a that looks "real" rather than slavishly "correct". If you had purchased a speedster in 1958, and USED it- it would look like this one. It oozes character out of every pore.
Mechanically, no car from the 50s ever ran like this one. Bill Steele (A guy with enough racing experience to know) said that Paul's car was one of the fastest he'd ever been in. "930 fast", he said. I've got a car with a very nice (145 hp) 2110. I've been a passenger in a car with a similar engine that was left for dead at over 100 mph by Paul. I've owned cars with 400 hp, nitrous equipped small blocks. The car is that fast. When Paul says "over 200 hp"- he isn't guessing- he's got dyno sheets to prove it. The engine alone went deep into 5 figures. The chassis is braced to handle it. The transaxle is built to lay the power down. It's fast. Really, really fast.
I saw pictures of "Butch" on line long before I ever saw the car in person. It looked like any other big engined VS to me. When I went to the Knotts show in '05 to make contact with some friends, and iron out the details of my Intermeccanica build, I saw some fabulous cars with astounding details. But when I looked a Paul's car, I was mesmerized- the car has a hypnotic quality that must be seen in person to be appreciated. It's as close to the real deal as you're ever going to get in a replica.
It isn't just a car, it's art. The buyer isn't just getting another replica, he's getting a legend.
I can't wait to see what Paul has coming up next.
