As Mark said, that's Paul Harford's car, "Butch".

There has never been, nor will there likely ever be another car like this one. There will be other big engined "uber-speedsters" (Intermeccanica even builds 911 powered cars), as well as cars that are more refined, but this car is unique in every way.

It's built to resemble what a car driven and raced in the '50s and '60s would have looked like. There are dozens of little touches all over the car that refer to rallies and racing events from a bygone era. You have to see the "collector art" under the front bonnet to appreciate it- hundreds of keepsakes from 50 years worth of travel and racing sealed under a clear finish. There's a log book (some in German, I believe) that outlines an imagined history of the car, dating from 1958. There are old mechanical rally stop watches on the dash, a hula girl from the '50s up front. It's a replica, but the only car I've ever seen with a that looks "real" rather than slavishly "correct". If you had purchased a speedster in 1958, and USED it- it would look like this one. It oozes character out of every pore.

Mechanically, no car from the 50s ever ran like this one. Bill Steele (A guy with enough racing experience to know) said that Paul's car was one of the fastest he'd ever been in. "930 fast", he said. I've got a car with a very nice (145 hp) 2110. I've been a passenger in a car with a similar engine that was left for dead at over 100 mph by Paul. I've owned cars with 400 hp, nitrous equipped small blocks. The car is that fast. When Paul says "over 200 hp"- he isn't guessing- he's got dyno sheets to prove it. The engine alone went deep into 5 figures. The chassis is braced to handle it. The transaxle is built to lay the power down. It's fast. Really, really fast.

I saw pictures of "Butch" on line long before I ever saw the car in person. It looked like any other big engined VS to me. When I went to the Knotts show in '05 to make contact with some friends, and iron out the details of my Intermeccanica build, I saw some fabulous cars with astounding details. But when I looked a Paul's car, I was mesmerized- the car has a hypnotic quality that must be seen in person to be appreciated. It's as close to the real deal as you're ever going to get in a replica.

It isn't just a car, it's art. The buyer isn't just getting another replica, he's getting a legend.

I can't wait to see what Paul has coming up next.
Jeez, thanks for the kind words guys. It has been a labor of love (Butch coincidently eclipsed the summer of love when owned and raced by a husband and wife team from Marin, but that's another story)...

I left-handedly mentioned awards because one of the ironies I experienced with this car was that it did indeed win recognition in a few car shows, both as a replica, usually second place to the fit and finish of dale Bate's Intermeccanica, a nice accomplishment in itself. But also twice against steel-bodied P-cars in the race and outlaw categories. Once at Emory's Parts Obsolete and another time at a Porchefest in Ventura.

Rolling Thunder, rolling art... it's a fun car, warts and all!
Good to chat with you last night JimBob. Many thanks for posting those additional pics. Nothing like a stroll down memory lane! I think I'll pull Butch and keep him.

Seems the bidding interest has waned and no one with any similance of intelligence has stepped up judging by the repetitive question, "What's your reserve?" and lack of further bidding... Now I remember why I hate selling cars on eBay. What made me think car number five would be any different!?!?

...and if the Stockholm fellow want's to own a pair of replicas, I'll give him a deal, but it won't be less than he paid for John's car. I hate referring to him in the third person but as he has not contacted me directly concerning my car, I'll just mention another person he could talk with about the car, besides me, is the man who has maintained it:
Ted at german Car Clinic 707.648.1463

Caio, Cherie, bye-bye!
I had a nice email conversation with Marcel and it seems he was looking for a beasty engine deal... I got the beasty engine but it is wrapped in a superbly revamped Vintage speedster. The 'Sum of its parts' thread was put away pretty much for good as I evaluated what it was I am selling.

Marcel, you ought to contact Theron about posting that cool video clip you sent me. I'm not certain how that would work, but it is a great type4 in action!

About a day left on this pass through eBay. Two serious questions, four what's your reserve questions, three"why buy a replica or how dare you.." questions and an indicated seventy-seven people watching the auction's status.

There are some great cars for sale right now! The Envemo that came up this A.M. is a real looker! There is still a chance that an SOC-lurker could score a discount with me, but none, I repeat, none save Marcel have contacted me directly.

Whatsamattafoyous,eh?
guys, I'm sort of new, but been watching market daily for years on at least 8 resource listings: the market is FLOODED with replicas and the askings are absurd in this market!!! One could easily buy NEW for 10 to 20% more with CHOICE, not PAULS unique 2615 monster mind you. There's some nice stuff out there, but also a whole bunch of headache/doodoo! Love your forum, you're all entertaining gentleman who are living the speedster life and bless you for it !!
