Out running errands in the IM on Sunday - at a light change I turned left at an intersection that had multiple lanes turning left - new yellow Mustang convertible inside and me on the outside, no big deal but since I led him around the turn he decided to show me how fast his horsie was (there were three clear lanes ahead for almost 1/4 mile).

NOT. Whisked away from him in second and widened the gap in third, only shifting at 6,000 RPM, then he backed off. At the next light we were side by side and I smiled at him but he wouldn't look at me.

Man, I love this car. Two liter engines hooked up to close ratio transaxles are a hoot.

Alohas,

What are the specs of your engine? I currently have a 2 liter in my '67 Beetle, would be interested in how these 356's handle the extra power from whichever powerplant is turning the wheels. In a Bug, its like suicide (especially w/ a swing axle tranny and 145 tires up front).

Alohas,

Sounds nice! Any guesses on HP? If its what I think it is, then in an IM 356 replica, you should easily be able to dust a Mustang. VW Beetles must weigh at least a couple hundred pounds more than these cars do, and Bugs can eat Mustangs with the right engine/tranny combo.

aloha,
Joel
Iwould suggest that you tread rather lightly on the Mustang bit.

I live in Nevada and my Baja Bug is known locally as 'The Mustang Destroyer.' I get hate mail (including threats of physical harm) from the wild horse people locally. I have talked to them, but I suspect that the wild horses have a higher IQ.
Hey Ron, back in the '70s I got seriously involved with a Maryknoll nun. That particular order is kind of progressive and does't usually wear habits. Anyway, she didn't TELL me she was a "lady of the cloth" and I found out quite by accident - sort of a super bummer.

Anyway, the guy driving the bumble-bee Mustang vert wan't wearing a collar, and since I beat him pretty badly it may have been a six with automatic - who knows? Who cares?

George,
Let's see now, you have a custom built engine in a custom built car. If the Mustang owner follows suit, and pursues the same automotive interests we do, then the next 'Tang you meet could easily have 400 Hp and very wide sticky tires out back. It is good to spank, but some of those pony cars can punch back pretty hard.
I'm also visualizing the old 2 liter Lotus 23B that killed the 4 and 5 liter Ferrari's, and continues to do so even today at the Vintage Races. "It all depends on your level of enthusiasm"!

David, I had a cherry '67 Shelby Mustang 350GT with 44,000 original miles; it was a nice car but my IM is quicker than it was (Shelby only did about a 14.5 sec 1/4 mile). There is a very active hot rod club here with some awesome street rods that are VERY FAST, but the average new Mustang, Camaro, or Firebird on our streets seem to have a case of the slows. Cat-back exhaust systems, down-sized belt pulleys, and funny air intakes don't add much power in the real world.
Stock SS Camaros are low 13 cars. Watch out for those Ponies with Saleen on the bumpers. Especially if they have some funny black number decals on them, the 351 is lethal . Also, remember how cheap those Paxton pony superchargers are. It's nothing to get them in the 12s all day long. The birds with W on the right back bumper are quick too! Assume the Vetts are all low 13 cars. We left out the dual turbo Zs, that's an 90s car that is FAST.

The old Shelby Mustangs wouldn't hook up. I know we've had this discussion before, buy my GT 500 (428 SCJ) went up in smoke. But the KRs are a legend.
