Missed you Vince. Good to see you haven't turned into some sugary sweet little bitc* boy due to speedster absence.

Mickey-
At the risk of beating this dead horse to a pulp: I understand your point, but don't necessarily agree with it. I don't think you're wrong and I'm better (or anything like that), but I think we really do look at these cars from different points of view.
I don't want an original-- I really don't. I like what the car is for what it is: a car that shares nothing but a "look" with something that NOBODY in my part of the world has ever seen (a Porsche 356A Speedster) anyhow. When I go to "cruise-ins", or drive somewhere in search of the perfect "black and blue" hamburger (BTW: You make 'em at your place?)-- everybody asks what it is, just to start a conversation. They wouldn't know a 356 speedster from a Studebaker, or an Vintage from a Frazer/Nash, nor do they care a whole lot: to them, it's just a cool car... and I can save the 15 minutes that it takes to explain the whole "replica" concept by just saying, "it's an Intermeccanica". "Cool car" they say, and move on.
If a guy wants to take it down to the gnat's eyelash on originality, then I'm OK with that too. I couldn't care less about the badges, etc.- but when it comes to how the car is titled, registered, or insured: my state (as well as every other state I know of) takes fraud very seriously. The fine for driving 35 in a 25 is $75 in my state-- the punishment for misrepresenting the provenance of a vehicle is a major fine, an impounded vehicle, and possible jail time. Not paying the appropriate sales tax is punished even more severely, and taken in conjunction with the improper registration, smells like the definition of fraud to most States Attorneys.
That's my point. The question referred to a certain uneasiness a guy had with antique tags. If the state is clear on what the vehicle is, and an owner has permission from the Secretary of State's police (or equivalent) to register a car in a certain way, then there isn't any need to feel uneasy. However, there is an unbelievable amount of misinformation about the legality of titling or registering a car in in a certain way. I've fallen victim to it (I had a JPS titled as a 58 Porsche through a "title service" who guaranteed the legality of something that was patently illegal, and a CMC titled as a '68 VW)-- and I'll tell you straight up that it's a completely different kind of "posing" than putting a Reuters badge on the front right fender. Putting a crest on a car, or driving 10 over is not the same thing as telling the state you have a '58 Porsche 356, when you have a CMC built in '92.
I went the whole way with this (my last) replica. I'm straight-up with the state, the badging, and what I tell people. It's a lot easier, and by extension, I'm never "uneasy".

FWIW, Stan, that's the most thoroughly explanative post EVER on the 'poser' topic.
I feel like I just had a conversation over a Guinness!
Well done.
Mickey's the worst offender ever -- he put Carrera on HIS car, AND he tells people it's a '73 Beetle SS. What he's not saying is that it's a CMC on a Ferrari chassis, but the state of Delaware let him title it as a Chevrolet pick-up, 'cuz he was 'honest.' It's insured as a Ford Bronco, on account of using his new kart to commute. He gets a multi-vehicle discount now.
He's also got a stash of Corpse badges, and he uses them as coasters at his restaurant.
(chuckle, chuckle ... stir, stir ...)

I AM the worst offender that's for sure. If you want to talk "poser" just look at the dork in the photo (man, I gotta work on my posing - maybe some modeling classes?)
Stan,
Let's agree to disagree on the "look" thing.
Everyone have a great memorial day weekend. And remember to take a moment and think about all who have sacrificed the ultimate for our sake.

I think "poser" has to do with attitude. Putting the Porsche badgeing on the car is part of the "replification process" How you use the badging and the questions it generates can determine the amount, if any, poser is in you.
I have never claimed to be a "356" and I once posted, re: the SOC badge design that "356" should NOT be on the badge because the cars are not 356s.
Perhaps we could determine amount of "Poserness" someone has by their license plate?

Ouch....that hurts.....You know if you try hard enough you can rationalize just about anything.....here's mine
as we all know 356 stands for the number of the design by mr Porsche.
It therefore stands to reason that 356 represents the body design not whether it's real or not....besides
I call everything MR. my bike is MR shovel my Ghia is MR Ghia
except the MRS of course, I call her BOSS.....
and lets not forget, I like to cause trouble, I never said I wasn't a poser on occasion....
by the way here is a picture of MR Ghia's power plant

Motor's lookin' pretty darn good...MR Ex-Poser! :)
Dale, upon further thought of the "356" thing, our cars are indeed
356"s....356 represents the design not the "Porsche" aspect of the species, so I don't understand your reasoning......
please explain why all the other $hit (badges) can be justified but not the "356".....My thinking is that the 356 fits our cars better than the other badging.......

Vince, 356 was the number of the PORSCHE design. Not Vintage, not JPS, not IM... Our cars, well, not yours anymore, look like the PORSCHE 356 but they are not 356s.
"MR 356" is pretty defining and, in my opinion, and that is what this thread was about wasn't it, would be a fitting license plate for a fully magnetic 356 owner, not a plastic car owner unless he wanted to be mistaken for a Magnetic car owner. Perhaps your alias is "Mr 356" and the plate identifys you as that person?
Our cars are replicating PORSCHE'S design #356 and the badges are part of that replication. If the plate said "Mr 356 REP" or something equally goofy, it might not be quite so "poser"
For someone with horns, you sure seem sensitive. Again my Northern California opinion."
And being Memorial Day (designated), Thanks for your service.

Dale, no sensitivity here, I can take it better than dish it out, and I promise not to be offended by anything any of the SOC'ers have to say. I suppose what we have here is a difference of opinion..
I have a choice to either except yours or mine..........
After considerable consideration, I think I'll go with mine....
Actually it would appear I have hit a nerve with you, so bring it on bud.
The DMV calls them vanity plates, so I suppose you can translate that to the "poser" definition if you stretch it a bit....
I have Vanity plates on all my Vehicles, that must make me the biggest poser on the site.....
WOW, I got some damn nerve getting on James case.....
Oh, and thanks, it was a pleasure protecting this great nation, but I was drafted....I wouldn't want anyone to think I joined
because I thought we were really threatened by a country half way around the world. I carry a torch for the 58+ thousand men and women who died in my war, and I always will...that is my sensitivity...

Splitting hairs now aren't we? It just boils down to personal preference - either you're like me, who takes it to the extreme with as much of the original badging and other stuff I can get on my car or you're like others who steer clear on anything Porsche (aside from the almost identical body specs of the original).
I, for the life of me, cannot see the difference when it comes to what any of us are "representing"? These cars were made for one purpose only, and that is to look (in regard to the body) like a Porsche 356 Speedster! It just doesn't matter what's on the car, the mere fact that it was ever built/copied is to give the impression and look of a 356 Speedster - THAT'S WHY IT WAS MADE TO LOOK THE WAY IT LOOKS!!!! When someone asks me what it is I tell them "It's a replica of a 1957 356 Porsche Speedster". And when they say "Well if it's a replica why does it say Porsche?" I reply "Because it's replica - duh, you idiot!" (well, not the "duh, you idiot" part) As if it didn't have emblems on it it would look nothing like a 1957 356 Porsche Speedster?
What about the whole "under the hood story" on Butch? That car didn't go to all those places and race. Personally I think it was a really cool idea - it's obvious, as I already mentioned, it all personal on how we choose to "mis"-represent our Replication 195? Porsche 356 Speedsters, no one is right and no one is wrong.
And Vince - you got the horns so I get to have the biggest poser honors!

Poser is such a harsh word. We are recreators, replicators, imitators. When it comes right down to it,we are just a bunch of tators.I like mine scalloped! I like Mickey chose to replicate as closly as possible, an original looking car. In fact, my license plate is "57PORSH". The car was not built to decieve, but to please! ME!!! This was my way of capturing a portion of automotive history that has fascinated me since my youth. I loved the cars of the Fifties. And being the unconventionalist that I am, the Speedster was an immediate fixation for me. Personally, I don't give a rats behind if some one is offended my attempt to pay tribute to a timeless piece of automotive history.I enjoy the heck out of my car,and have never thought of myself or anyone else who owns and drives a replica car as a poser. I respect these cars as labors of love for each of those that have chosen to build one. As a dear friend of mine so eloquently has stated,"It's not what you buy,it's what you build". Each one of these cars is an extension of us. We all love the attention that these cars draw. Be honest,we are not posers. We are mostly unique people with an unconventional flare for the an unusual classic car.

As I have stated many times before, I was a purist prior to my speedster ownership, but the damn thing was just too enticing, I had to have one. It was the best car experience of my life, even my wife fell in love with it and she could care less about cars.
I will admit that I would get pissed at the guys who were afraid to take their cars more than a few miles from the house, and showed them off all the time, and these guys I labeled as "Posers"....As far as I was concerned, these were to be driven not displayed. I have a hard time being proud of something that isn't what is represented. It's not old, It's not restored, and again as I have said before there is a disappointment in people when it is realized that it is a replica....and not the real thing. Now I obviously don't give much of a hoot what other people think but then again I only rarely show it off for that reason and when I did I posted a sign saying exactly what it was to avoid all the B.S. I never considered myself a "Poser" but then again I guess I was just fooling myself....
We are car guys,(Angela and the crazy Cuban included) and the main thing is to enjoy whatever it is that we like in the way of automobiles, that said this was at the very least an interesting thread to read, and you can all thank me for that later, it's memorial day and MR Ghia is in a parade this morning.......
Everyone have a great day and hug a VET.....

Lookin' way cool Daddy-O!
Butch is probably the biggest poser on the SOC.
I'm not, I just build and drive posers (even though Butch has a Porsche engine!). Poser is such a lame term... There has been a recent movement by replicar buyers to 'unbadge' certain replica makes. Good for them but probably for the wrong reasons... If you have a replica you have the option of taking your detailing to any degree you wish, including plates and tags. Some places there is risk, some places not. BFD.
I liked the term Crazy Cuban, that's what I want to come back as. She can ride Butch anytime or just 'pose' with him, LOL.
At Paso I kiddingly hollered at Angela as I was pulling out of the hotel parking lot, "Is that there a real Spyder?" and she grabbed herself up high and yelled back, "As real as my hooters!" I'm still mulling that one over, but WTF!
Hey Alderson you poser, you should have bought Butch, then you'd a been a poser through and through, LOL! Start logging miles on the car, not your keyboard. I think it's cool you had the option to get an old-timey-looking tag to accompany your old-timey-looking car.
Vince, good to see you at Paso... I wish we had more time to talk. I don't get the Ghia move though???

Angela,
I just ordered my shirt - I couldn't pass that one up.
Vince,
That car is so cool - I love the old school thing. No flash and shiny shiny, just class, very sweet.
What am I missing with this replica thing? Why would there be any move to stop badging a car that is a friggin copy of another car? What, is it like "Well I build/manufacture a car that looks exactly like a Cobra-Speedster-MGTD-Ford GT - blah, blah, blah.... but I don't want to mislead anyone into thinking that I'm copying anything." Geez, are we now putting degrees of fakeness on this? I promise this is the last time I say this - If you drive anything that is made to look like another car and that said car was not made in the original factory of the original company that designed and produced the car you are driving a fake car and nothing else! Period the end! (Skip Barber bought a "recreation of a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO at auction for $275K. It was handmade and had every single thing the real ones had, including emblems. It was a perfect top to bottom copy inside and out, engine, everything! But you know what? It wasn't a real Ferrari cause it weren't made in Maranello! The real deal is in the millions, personally I think Skip got a pretty good deal.)

Paul's story reminds me of someone else's here comeback regarding his car. To other people he likens his car to a good breast augmentation.
You know their fake....But they look GREAT...and are LOADS of FUN to play with! I use it all the time.

Paul, trying to answer your Ghia question in as few words as possible, I always wondered how a guy could keep a car for 30-40 years when I get so bored and need to change every so often...
I have had so many cars over the years, its rediculous.
Although the speedster is far and away the most fun car I have ever owned, I am currently in a phase where the guys I hang with on occasion (drinking Buds) all have collector type cars and show them every so often, and quite frankly showing the speedster is like showing a new car to me. Sure it looks 50 years old, but it was only 5 or 6 years old. I needed to make a change, the Ghia seemed like the right choice, It's air cooled, I have had a few previously, they are collectable, especially the lowlight, and the ghia is coveted as VW's only sports car, it has a good history and I can hang with the SOC for runs. Those were just a few of the reasons.
I hope I can keep it long enough to watch it's value climb a bit...
Almost forgot, my main complaint at the beginning of this thread was the "antique" plates on a new car, it had nothing to do with badging,
or replicating....we somehow got sidetracked off that....

Bill- that comment you referenced would be by me.
I was at a local car meet with a LOT of ultra high-end euro cars (Ferrari Anza, Buggatti Veyron, Carrera GT, etc). A passerby noticed the placard on the windshield of my VS Speedy that read "1957 Speedster Replica Manufactured by Vintage Speedster, Inc."
He asked why anyone would want a replica. I replied "...look at it this way. It's like breast augmentation. Everybody knows they're fake, they're better than the originals but still fun to play with!".
James - Bwahhh Haaaaa HAAAA HAAAAA. Welcome to THE MADNESS!!!!

Well, this was fun. At least I now know that there are opinions here that people are not afraid to slap down. I think a great thread is one where it gets wild and crazy and even a little nasty, but everyone walks away with no hard feelings. Thanks everyone for your comments, on or off the subject, they were great. It also allowed me to figure out where a few of the personalities are on SOC...
Paul, I thought long and hard about your car, and if it hadn't been for location and my wifes excitement on seeing the ad for the IM we ended up buying, it would be in my garage right now. I am sure that will make somebody a very happy owner some day soon.
What to ask next? LOL

Vince, I love that Ghia. I'm thinking about "borrowing" that color for my Speedster.
