I am considering buying a Beck speedster but have run into a wall with DMV, they say I can not register a tube based car in NY or have it inspected as it needs to have air bags, catalytic converter, etc as it was not built in 1957. I did talk to Carey Hines at Special Editions as he had one I was interested in and helped as much as he could. Any help would be appreciated.

I bought a CMC wide body about 5 yrs ago from a guy that said "I should have it on the road in a couple months." I guess you know how that routine goes!

Thank you.

Gary

I'm a Beck owner in Michigan and registered mine as an "assembled vehicle."

Process was like this:

1) Inspection by police

2) Apply for registration and get temporary tag and start driving right away

3) Wait a couple of months and get contacted by state guy

4) State guy comes by and applies MI VIN plate and hands me title

5) Return to DMV office and get permanent tag

I did a quick search on New York and found this link.  It seems like a similar process.  You'll find that most local DMV people have no clue.

Your process seems a little more difficult and appears that you won't be driving until closer to the end of the process.

I second Tom's statement that "most DMV people have no clue"... beyond ordinary run-of-the-mill registrations...so familiarize yourself with their information pertaining to your not-run-of-the-mill vehicle  and carry a copy of that in with you with pertinent information underlined.

Comb your hair... smile and be polite

Be EARLY...before the clerk has had to deal with ignorance, rudeness, and uncombed hair.

Gary, I'm in the Syracuse area. I went thru the DMV process with my Beck a few years ago.  Just follow the guidelines in the link posted previously. Find a local DMV that is easy to work with. they can help with some of the paperwork. I actually had good luck calling Albany when I had questions. It takes some time & paperwork, but it's worth it.  Becks are nice cars & they have top notch support

Thanks for all you responses. My concern was owning an expensive lawn ornament if this didn't work. I did get a very nice lady at DMV and I did comb my hair, smiled and even brushed my teeth! She was pretty negative about getting the car inspected based on the non-emission parts on the Beck. I often wondered how Cobra cars get done based on DMV's response?! Were the NY fees expensive to do this or just the normal outrageous fees?

Thanks again!

Gary

guess I got lucky,i live on long island and purchased my beck from texas where it was registered as a 1957 Porsche.just went to the dmv and registered it like any other car.no problems,no fees, nothing.I guess it was easier because I had a texas title already and was not registering for first time.i only claimed I paid 100$ for it to keep the taxes low and no one said a thing!sometimes you can use stupidity to your advantage.

It is much easier, I am told, IF the car is registered as a 1957 Porsche. But if they as the magical question "when was it built?" then the games begin. The person I spoke to also made it clear it would not pass insection if the build date was on the registration (and build plate) because of the lack of emission equipment.  I have tried the "stupidity" angle and I guess it was not to my advantage.  It is real interesting the different versions I get from trying to buy and register a simple speedster. Now I am understanding "the madness".

Thanks again for all the input and suggestions, I am on a mission now!

Gary

Not sure if your post above has a typo or not.  You don't want to register your car as a 57 Porsche, since it isn't.  Make sure, no matter what else you do, that you don't present any docs stating that the car is anything but a replica.  Some states have differing terms of art to describe our replicas, such as California, which uses the term specialty construction.  Check with the state in which you are attempting registration.  PM me if you would like more info.

gwan,... Tenacity usually pays off,,,BUT

I don't know how personal property tax is applied in NY.

In CT annual automobile taxes are based on the usually decreasing Bluebook value...except 'vintage' Porsches annually appreciate in the Bluebook!

Here's my story:

My VS was purchased out of Oregon where it was registered as a '58 Porsche Convt. at the bottom of that registration certificate was noted "REPLICA"...a notation that wasn't included in my new CT paperwork.

My town's tax bill was based on the bluebook value of a '58 Porsche Convt...Astronomical!!!

It took a lot to convince the tax office that in reality it was a '63 VW masquerading in a plastic body... But my taxes aren't based on a 63 VW (which is nothing) but a percentage of what I paid for it. (They get'ya one way or another) Which makes it the most expensive '63 VW in Bethel Connecticut.

My bill of sale / title said 57 VW so that's what I titled it as.
Collector plates are a one time deal here and transferable, so that means I didn't have to get no tabs, no nothing, I just payed the sales tax.
I never have to pay ever again but there are restrictions ie it can't be my daily driver, which isn't a problem. My daily driver only averages 1000 miles a year and I just purchased a Ducati st4 so I have a hard time driving/riding them all, guess there is worst problems to have.

I don't want to register the speedster as something is isn't, it is a replica, it is what it is. I just meant that it would be easier, but I can't change what it is. What I meant was NY makes it very hard for a tube based frame cars (speedsters, Cobras) because they do not have a VIN stamped into the frame like a frame based speedster. Most frame based speedster owners call their speedster a VW dictated by the VIN on the frame. Right or wrong, I know that is what many people do to avoid the drama of getting a rebuilt/reconstructed tag for their car. With the frame based speedster with a VW title/resigtration, they just call it what it is, a VW.  Now that being said, I did go over what Tom had found regarding how to register a Beck and I now know that I have play the DMV game to get what I want.  As I said before Carey was a big help as well letting me know what to expect. So now I have to make that decision, and do appreciate all your input!

Gary

BTW, I bought a 1947 Chevy Fleetmaster hot rod (350 eng) a couple years ago and wanted 1947 plates, that was drama too. In the end, I got a original 47 plate, but that too what a long process.  Hmmmm, maybe Stan is right I should move out of NY!

No, we don't have that propery tax in NY (yet), however I am aware of that tax as our daughter lives in CT.

Thanks for the well wishes on my new to me Speedster. Life is funny, when I was about 19, I bought a 1960 Porsche convertible without an engine for I believe $900. My Dad got an engine and I drove that for a couple years to and from NY to Norfolk Va when I was in the Navy. Now it is deva vu all over again. The Porsche, not the Navy! I am depressed to think I sold that Porsche now seeing what they go for now, but I guess everyone had one car they wish they didn't sell.

BTW, if this crazy town, I am glad to be a resident!
