Hi,

I am from Germany searching for a good replica since 1 year. And finally after having seen many many speedsters (and also the original one of the Porsche Zuffenhausen museum) I must say the Vintage Speedster is the best for the best price!
Here some German Makers:
-Scheib: home.arcor.de/classic4u/scheib/index.htm
Price: 29000 Euro, one of the stiffest chassis, technical/construction very good, finish/paint A+ but the details compared with original not as perfect as VS (door handles inside from beetle, some chrome stuff is painted only)
- Sayer: Does not exist any more. did not bad ones. I just drove one last week, but also: not the details of a VS
- Apal: one of the best knon in Germany. The Maker does not really exist any more. they just sell parts, they used to sell turnkey but got too many problems with registration so they quit. -Also not perfect. Chassis wasn't very stiff.

If you have a close look at the European Replicas you will mention a big failure! All of them seem to have the same form of body and there is a mistake: The room between the front lights an the horne-grill/flash lights is far to big!! The VS makes a perfect copy in comparison! Absolutely the same as the original. So all European replicas look a little bit strange from the front. You don't see it from the beginning, but you always wonder that something is going wrong here - and this was the reason why I want to import the VS!

I came to conclusion to buy a Vintage speedster and either import it by myself or buy/cooparate with a dealer of Switzerland - a finacial question. The price of a VS in Europe is 27000- 35000 Euros! If you think that with the dollar the VS in CA costs 18000$=13500 Euros its horrably expensive!!!!! By importing by myself I calculate with 21000 Euros.

So long
One thing about Schieb, it appears from their website that they manufacture a replica of the cabriolet, in addition to the Speedster, and it appears well made. I don't know of anyone else in the world that is presently replicating the cabriolet, and I was very interested in acquiring one from them, but the communication gap was too great. The Brazilian company, Chamonix, has a cab on its website, but according to one of its agents, it has discontinued manufacture of that model. At one time, another Brazilian outfit called "Envemo" manufactured both a replica Cabriolet and a replica 356 Coupe, both of which were outstanding, according to their owners. You can see an Envemo Cabriolet in the "sold" section of Bob's Classics Inc., and someone from San Paulo posted pictures of his Envemo Coupe on the web. Envemo still manufactures "jeep" -like vehicles in Brazil, but when I enquired about doing a Cabriolet (through a local Texas gentlemen who knows the company) we received no response. If you enter Envemo in your search engine, and do a little searching you'll find these cars around. the Brazilians still use them for cross-country racing.
Scott et al.,

My father was the North American importer/distributor of the ENVEMO when it was in production. (Dad first met Chuck Beck when he was showing a ENVEMO at a kit show in Vegas, Chuck had a Spyder... the rest is history)
The molds were purchased by us a number of years ago (Chamonix/Beck) when ENVEMO quit making them.
We will be building both the coupe and cabriolet again in the near future, but I can't pinpoint a date just yet. Modifications have been made to incorporate our 3" tube frame as opposed to the VW Brazilia chassis they were previously built upon.
It is a very solid replica incorporating many original parts, and just from my small amount of "chat" about the project, we have created a small waiting list for the coupe (including a pair of guys from this forum).

FYI: The Beck Speedster is also available in Europe directly fom us, or through dealers in Italy and Spain. Germany is the hardest place to register, because of the new chassis, but it still can be done. You also are required to have a catalyser (sp?) and fuel injection.

Hi again.

I can imagine that you had communication problems with Mr.Scheib - he is a very "original" type. If you want me to assist you in informations just tell me - he just lives 1hour driving from me.
to Ludovic: So you did not have any problems with the 356california.com-guys? My importing calculations are between 20K to 24k Euros depeding on who is gonna make the registration for me (I asked 3 importeurs/dealers an I got three "yes" differing from 800 to 3500 Euros -for the changins needed plus all the registration formalities!). And at the moment I do not have "time difficulties" to manage the import.
We will see...
To Carey: Just tell me as soon as you strat production and get the registration in Germany! And tell me the price then.

Carey and Stan:

do you have an estimate of the anticipate cost of a turn key cabriolet and a coupe, with whatever is standard? (same question re; cost of cab from SAW, Stan, and what's the web address? [sorry, i know you other guys have been talking about SAW for a while, but I haven't followed it closely.] I would expect these cars might be considerably more luxurious than the Speedster. Also, anticipated start date for the Envemo mold start up?
Hi there,

I just wanted to let the European community know, that I'm planning on importing a VS in early '05. I'll be flying to NewOrleans in Nov. this year for some training and after that I want to place my order with Kirk. Now the big question is, has anybody ever done the complete registration for a VS in Germany? Kirk mentioned something like " we have to take a pre '57 chassis" Does anybody know if we can ge H- (Oldtimer) licensplates? Has anyone ever talked to an insurance company? Any hints?

Thanx Mike
