You just missed Good Guys show at Del Mar last weekend. 2000 (really!) honest to gosh hot rods, including the latest Ridler and all the stuff from Chip Foose. Total sensory overload. My neighbor had a fairly common but nice '40 Ford parked and right next to him was Chip Foose's "P-32" rod and next to that was Chip's "Hemisfear". Take note that there were NO barriers between you and these cars, just walk up and stick your head inside to look.

At least two supercharged cars claimed over 1000 HP. They were cruising the fairgrounds at 10 MPH - impressive! At least ten naturally aspirated claimed over 600 horses (572 Chevy blocks, brand new from GM).

Included (buried?) in the mix were two speedsters. Beware of one - named something Carrera - he would try to sell your senile grandma a singles cruise! "NOT a kit cat, a finely handcrafted vehicle made by the finest craftsmen." 220 Hp from a normally asperated 2276 with Porsche shroud, Yeah - sure. "And with a full bellypan, the car actually rides lower as you go faster - up to one inch lower at 130 MPH!" Oh, they had overlooked installing the seal between engine tin and body so you could recycle the hot air from below. Looked like a Vintage body to me. RUN!
Jeff, The American Handcrafted Automobile show is scheduled for Knotts Berry Farm April 25 26. There are always lots of Speedster and Spyder manufactureres at the show to discuss builds and show their work. And there are a couple of Porsche replica (Spyder and 356) divisions in the show. There are usually several kits and turn key cars participating in the show.

It's really a very interesting show. And builders who are not afraid of competing for clients usually show up there.

Jeff - here's what ya do:

On the morning of the Knotts Show, go FIRST to Cars and Coffee in Irvine, CA. Starts early, 7 or 7:30. They feature a different marque each week but regardless of the feature, absolutely extroardinary cars show up. Winds down real quick, 8:30 or 9.

Then head over to Knotts. Most important to visit with Tom McBurnie, his lovely but long suffering wife Jeannie and the always affable Bill George. I know I'm openly prejudiced, but trust me, these are GREAT people!

Angela, Thank you for noting my affability. Most of those who read my posts* might wonder who that cranky old fart is . . . .

It's the politics and side-deals that get my hackles-up. As you know I can be a very nice (and affable) guy if you don't try to feed me crap, and tell me it's Beef Bourgogne.

* Which for the last year or so have been very rare.

Jeff,
Knotts will be fun, but bring your snake boots as it's dominated by Cobras. No worries about bites though, they mostly just sit very still, baking in the warm California sun.

If you haven't figured it out yet, Bill George is our resident skeptic. He's really got his pulse on the business and who is purchasing which award at each car show. If you have time meet Bill, buy one of his tinfoil hats and chat for a while. He's a cool guy who has a sense of humor and can take a ribbing.
