well its coming close to having to have a color and I still don't have one in mind. Would anyone have stone grey pictures other than Scott Sloans and the one featured in Exc. magazine. Its such a hard color to see the true tone becuase of how it changes depending on the lighting. And in every picture it looks different to me. Any help would be appreciated

Jane,
Stone Grey is one of the most difficult colors to judge by a photo. You are very correct in observing that the color is very dependent on the light and shadow.

You honestly need to see one "in the wild" to make sure. If not, it is a big leap of faith.

Contrary to the above, I will look thru my pictures and if I find something, I'll send them your way. Is your email address on SOC good?

Re: Stone Grey

Hi Jane,

I posted a thumbnail gallery for you at http://dubudee.com/ You'll find some pics of Roadsters, Vert Ds, a couple of Speedsters and pics of Scott's IM Speedster posted to the gallery. I have more stone grey pics that I'll find on a CD collection of 356 pics and will post them when I have time to sort through them.

As you know Stone Grey shows in a variety of tones with different lighting and backgrounds. I like the color and think that on a Replica it gives the car the right touch of that classic/retro look many seek. Dale's 100% right....It's not for everyone. But it's one of my favorites on 356s after seeing Scott's and a couple of others at shows.

Henry/IM built a 2.7L Stone grey Speedster that was featured in Excellence in September '03 if you have back issues. I'm sure he has pics of it. If you are having a Roasdter built then take a good look at the 59Vert D in the gallery with the light deerskin leather..... ! Let us know more about the car as it progresses.

Wilhoites Restorations can send you a sprayed on sample of any 356 color.

Hope this helps.
I really like Scott's car. I do like the SG Speedster with the red interior and the German Shepard in the seat.

The Stone Grey roadster with the light interior is to blaugh and if it is the car I think it is, belongs to a "hater".

Note that there wasn't a car with a tan top, they all have black.
Ricardo,

Dale pegged it... SG is a color you have to see in every light before choosing it. Some like the variations of tan and green different lighting brings out, some don't. I almost went with it in a build similar to that 1600S Dale likes with the red interior. (The owner drove it in with the Dog checking everything out just as the pic shows,,, pretty cool)I backed off SG because I was unsure I would like it over the long term. After seeing Scott's car for two years running I'm a fan of SG and would consider it if I ever have another one built (in the year 2525).

I like that bottom row shot of the Vert D (minus trim) in SG. The pics came from a variety of sources, some are mine, some from Rick, and Dale and a few from the net. I have more, but the ones displayed should give Jane a good idea of the shades/variations it reflects in different settings. I hadn't noticed but Dale is right on the tops, all black. I've seen one other interior combo and that was a medium sea green leather... I think it was a factory color. It actually looked pretty good.

The Skinz look sharp!

(Roger on the hater comment.)
WOW! I didn't know it, but THAT'S the color that I've been trying to identify! The body work on my coupe just isn't all that good and it'll never get better without expensive panel replacement. I thought that a light grey/green might be the best move for a vintage look and for hiding the flaws.

Thanks for posting that gallery, Jim ! ! ! !

What's the best interior color, other than dark red, to accompany SG?

Justin, it is very hard to determine color on a monitor but I think the car you pictured is Slate Grey, not Stone Grey.

The car in the recent Kit Car Mag., if I am thinking of the same one is a "Roadster" and the color is Slate Grey.

Stone Grey is actually a bit like a green olive. Slate Grey is actually a medium grey, like the ex-John Leader JPS. The pictures show Scott Sloans car. It is the one that is not chiffon/yellow, red, or black.
