So, I finally get a chance to crawl around under my new speedster to see what is what. I know I should have done it before I bought it but hindsight is 20/20.

Anyways, I see a pair of vice grips clamped on a body mount bolt (see pic). I remove the grips to find a bolt under it. What a relief I was afraid the bolt was stripped and some genius decided to use vice grips to get the job done.

I guess what is really funny is that this car was built in 1991 by CMC. I'm also the third owner of the car. Seems somebody would have noticed vice grips under the car all those years.

Oh, well now I have a nice pair of Craftsman vice grips.

Paul, That bolt just holds one side of the seat belt. If you plan on no rear passengers I won't worry about it. Or if you needed it just replace the bolt. Look on the bright side ,now you have an extra pair of vise grips. The bolt just directly below it is a body bolt. If you do replace the bolt make sure you use large diameter washers to help displace the load and strain.
Good Luck
Joe
Whew, glad to hear that it isn't a body mount bolt. Backseat seat belts? Perhaps for a ampute.

Interesting, didn't realize CMC didn't build cars. What did fiberfab do?

After crawling around under the car I can see the builder, whom ever it was, took a few short cuts.

Maybe if I keep looking I might find a full set of snap on tools!
I remember when I bought mine that they had a few that either CMC built or they had someone local in Miami build them, and they were used as show horses - took them to auto shows, home shows, sitting in the terminal at Miami International Airport and so forth. Maybe they DI D build a few just to show that it could be done (although I would really like to see someone build one in their quoted 40 hours!!!!)
Monster Garage Reality Show!!

What an idea! Just to make it interesting they could do it with small teams. One team gets three different size vice grips, a slot screw driver and a phillips head.

The other team gets a tool box filled with metrich wrenches and drives and the same set of screw drivers.

From what I have heard no one could do it in 40 hours, but I bet the guys with tools could do far better than the vice-grip guys.
