Good Morning from Aus.
I am in need of some help. I am wanting to import a replica Speedster from the States shortly but due to regulation here, it has to be built no later than Dec1988. This is due to our regulation changing and it becoming a nightmare after that period. Can anyone tell me what manufacturers were doing replicas at that time so it helps me cut down the leg work?
Any help would be awesome.

Pre- '88?
Intermeccanica and CMC, off the top of my head, although I think FiberFab might have made a few as well. The issue you'll have is that they both produced cars after '88 as well, so you'd need to find one that has a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin, or a "Special Construction" title with the pre- '88 date.

Or any Vintage Speedster built Speedster since they are built on VW pans and retain the original VIN and the date that the VW was first registered. For instance VS built my car in 2001 but the registration only says it is a 1960 VW.
Would that work or do they need to see a build sheet??

FiberFab (1964) predated CMC by a few years before they merged with CMC in 1983.
I noticed Europe is hung up on "build date" and they differentiate that from the VW chassis build date. So it has to be built 29 years ago? How on earth are they going to know - my Certificate of Origin says Nov 1989 and VW chassis title is 1971. I have never registered it - so does that mean when I register it --- in 2017 it will be a 2017 build?
Tom - That's excellent interpretation! I've got real 1971 FL license plate that I'm going with so that clinches it. A 30 year old vehicle registration in FL is $75 vs $225 for newer.

Greg, you'll NEVER have to worry about that...
It is an insane and backward rule, especially for replicas. We just have to work around it.
Stu, I've got an Intermeccanica right now for sale that meets your requirements. I can even get Intermeccanica to include a letter which states the car was built before 1985.
