I was going through my pics and found an AH xxxxxx serial number and got pretty excited until it dawned on me that it was my trans. And it couldn’t be an AH engine case because it’s a single relief case.

So with interest piqued, I looked through my gallery again but couldn’t find the engine number I thought for sure I had from when I was trying to get some info on my engine from CB. (Unsuccessfully, I guess they don’t keep records)

So I went down and looked, and I have an unstamped case. Relatively certain it’s magnesium, but not positive. Not even a OEM replacement VW stamp.

Anyone have a clue how I could identify it?  As I’ve posted before, the only info I have I got from the PO, which was that it’s a “CB Perf 2 liter.”

If it is a VW case, it should be stamped on the side of the sump, the side the thermostat is on. On a Spyder, this is the driver's side.

It is VERY common to not have a serial number stamped below the generator stand, replacement cases don't get stamped. Mine has a Jake Raby(RAT) and a number.

An AH trans case is perfect for a Spyder: it's a 1968 to 1972 dual side cover case, just before VW switched to the single side cover case for rear-wheel drive only.

Thanks Danny, I'll look though my pics again. I'm 90% certain I took a picture of it before I ordered some parts that had single/double relief compatibility. I'm sure I missed it because I was focused on pics of the generator stand.

ps: IIRC, it's not stamped like the engine number is,  it's cast into the case.

I must be misremembering. Can't find it anywhere. I'm going to have to go down and crawl under it.

So I finally got around to getting under the Spyder today and here’s what I found: AS21 single relief Brazilian case. Part # 000 101 14. According to the info I found, the “000” means it’s a replacement case vs the “043” in Danny’s pic.

The thing I don’t understand is that AS21 is supposed to be the later magnesium case for the FI motors, but it’s a single relief case.

Sorry my accelerator cable is in the way but the case reads (L-R) 2BR over 22, VW/Audi logo, Brazil over 000 101 14, AS 21
