When I was in United States Auto Race Marshalls (sounds impressive, but all I did was flag at turns) in the early '60s, a Porsche dealership in Monterrey (Don Wester, IIRC) raced Speedsters that IIRC had decals (or maybe paint-ons) featuring a large black eagle on a yellow background. The whole schmear was about 6x6" IIRC. The only thing I have seen talked about and seen recently is the Mobil horse. Does anyone remember the decal I have described, or did I maybe just dream it up? If such a decal is available, I would sure like to know who markets it. Wester had it on a silver car and it looked terrific. Very German and very hip for the car.

They seem to be big on eagles over there... I have seen either a forerunner to or a perhaps a rival to ADAC eagle on a yellow ground. Seems to me the organization it represented began with the letter 'O'
The bird was a little more stylized to my recollection.

Run a car club search Bavaria or Austria as well as Germany, maybe it'll pop up.
Similar to it, TC. I saw a couple of other eagles on the website that had black on yellow background. Problem is that my grandparents never taught me German. Mein Grosfatter (sp?) was from Berlin. The art on the metal plaques offered for sale is just incredible. Some of the lettered signs might look great in the engine compartment. There were a couple that looked very official, but probably said something like, "Keep off the grass." I will check out the other sites. Thanks, guys.
Is this the eagle?

The German eagle is already an old national symbol for the Kings and Emperors of Germany, or its predecessors (to make it easy, the former Empire is named Germany below, even though the name was not officially used until 1871).
Even though Charlemagne used an eagle as the national symbol around 800, he claimed to be the successor of the Roman Emperors, who already used an eagle, it was not until the end of the 12th century that the eagle was used in arms of the Emperors. Before the end of the 12th century the eagle sometimes appears as the national symbol, but mainly shown as a natural eagle.
