What a maroon!
Sorry to hear about that, Gerry. If memory serves, there's a small clip (a miniature cotter pin) through most interior escutcheons. That's the crescent-shaped one with the rotating actuation which opens the door -- and it simply plops onto a splined shaft and then the pin holds it by way of a groove in the shaft.
You might have to compress the door panel padding just a bit to secure the part.
If it's the other piece you're talking about, the door pull, that one is usually at the top half of the door and has simple attachments; you need a screwdriver for that guy.

If you're looking for the door handle actuator (that which the handle is attached to, rather than the handle itself), it's actually a VW part number. I have those part numbers if you need them. They're different for driver and passenger doors.
Gordon,
Thanks. I am actually looking for the handle. Guy broke it in half.

Call Mary at Vintage Speedsters.
562-402-4334
They have them in stock.

A car wash does seem to be an odd place for a Speedster, just asking for trouble there. Was the top up or down?
Gordon.
I don't think the woman who typically answers the phone at Vintage is Mary, Kirk's wife, unless that has recently changed. I can't recall her name (maybe Carol), but she is very nice and VERY knowledgeable.

Thanks to all for the help. I was hoping someone had a spare before calling VS.
I don't post here much, but you do get a flavor for the attention span of folks that were more interested in why I was at a car wash vs. my handle problem!

Both Mary and Cathy do phone duty, both are top notch in my book as they have put up with my pita special request parts orders for years. ~Alan
In case anyone is interested, Stoddard's sells 356A handles and they are much nicer than the VS handles (which ar VW I think) for not much more money.
I put them on and the fit and work great.

Yeah, but what's up with going to the car wash? ;-)
It was car wash wet titty day
How about the external passenger side for a CMC? The button just wasn't there one day:
