Troy, these were very popular with sandrail guys. They were called something like a "center cooling" shroud. The theory was (with the addition of an offset alternator/generator stand) they centered the fan and were suppose to direct air equally to all 4 cylinders. It was just theory and not very practical. Some models incorporated the upper cylinder tin and fan shroud as (1) piece and others were strictly the shroud and bolted up to stock VW upper cylinder tin.
Unfortunately they didn't work as claimed and in reality, a stock VW fan shroud worked much better. The up side is they look cool but not to be confused with "cooling"
BTW, they are still available at various VW aftermarket stores.
