Who's headed to car week in Carmel / Monterey?

Last year I ran in the Pacific Grove rally on Friday, with my '64 Citroen cabriolet........Troy Sloan was there with his wide body, along with maybe three 550's and another Speedster.  Coupla real 356's too of course, as well as other classic cars and hot rods. There were even 2 matching VW Campers, like twins.

I like to go on Thurs. when the Pebble Beach Concours tour rolls in and parks on 3 or 4 blocks of Ocean Ave in Carmel (about 11AM) for a few hours. You get to see a portion of the cars that will cost you big money to see out on the golf course over the weekend.  We hit the Historic Races where the featured marque last year was Shelby @ Laguna Seca on the way home to the Bay Area.

I'm entered in Concours Italiano this year with my Chapron bodied Citroen, to try something different, it is all day Friday.  Costs a lot to get in to see that one too, but the whole week is about raising money for charity. Should be some really cool cars at this one!   http://www.concorso.com/

I'm in - will be at the "Little Car Show" in Pacific Grove on Wednesday with the Fiat/Abarth -http://www.marinamotorsports.org/events/

and back on Friday to Pacific Grove's Concours/Rally with the Porsche 924S

.

Musbjim was right about my taking pictures - but I was there yesterday at Laguna Seca for the "PreHistoric" weekend (or ... PreRolexReunion, I guess) - photos at

www.spydersite.shutterfly.com  (125 or so mostly 356's, a couple Spyders, and 356/Spyder era cars)  and on www.svautoevents.shutterfly.com (400+ photos including those on Spydersite and more) - from Paddock, and 'on track' - access to photo cutouts is eliminated or limited - so past events have more/better 'on track' photos but the older events are also on the spydersite.

.

hope to see some of you - should be 4-7 Spyders at Pacific Grove Friday - I'm in a more mundane car now - sold mine after 7 happy years of ownership.

We've been there the last two years, but can't make it this year (something about a non-car related vacation in Great Britain for our anniversary. What...ever ).  We'll be back next year for sure.  Car-freakin'-heaven.

On Thursday morning around 6:30 am, try to make it over to the start of the Tour D'Elegance where Gooding is at Pebble.  It's the best kept secret of the weekend. The cars are just coming off the transporters for the first time and lining up for the tour. Only the dedicated car guys are out there and it's a fantastic opportunity to talk to the owners and drivers in a relaxed atmosphere.  I met Stirling Moss there for the first time in '11 and had a great time with him reminiscing over his 250GTO.  Last year, I talked at length with the Maharajahs about the cars they'd brought over from India. Hagerty even buys breakfast.

I will be in Pacific Grove on Friday, August 16 for the PG Rally on Lighthouse Avenue (the main drag). Starts at 1:00; ends around 5:00. The Spyder owner contingent of Speedsterowners will have 6 or 7 cars (maybe more) in a group (at least, that's the plan). 200 cars from all genres and eras will be present. YeeHaw.

Sports Car Digest Weekly (for August 8) has the week's schedule.

Jim, I won't be there for the historics, but if you get a chance, come on by to PG. The "old crew", including Rick Jiloty, Ralph Castro and who knows who else will be there. It's been a long time since I saw you and Will, so I hope we can chew fat and rub elbows...maybe toss down a beer or two (is that legal on Lighthouse Ave??).

Weather is supposed to be perfect!! Sure hope to see you. It's been far too long!

For those of you who missed the rally...we had a great time. Weather was around 70 with spotty fog mixed with sun. Doug Werner, Rick Jiloty, Don Chiang, Ralph Castro and I showed up for the show that featured some very neat classics. I hate to be prejudiced, but I would say that the Spyders drew more attention than any of the other cars. Great fun, and thanks for the pics, Rick. Great job!

As for Will Pierson and Musbjim, where were you? Almost forgot: the original Spyder at the Mecum Auction brought.......ta da!......$3,750,000. But---hey---it's "real."

Hey Doc! Sorry to have missed the event and the chance to hang out with you guys!

We moved my wife's mother in with us a few years ago and she recently turned 99 y.o.! WOW! Anyway, Thursday night she fell in her room & we took her to the ER to have her checked out. X-R, MRI, and no broken bones fortunately, she's a tough old gal and came back home!

We didn't want to leave her so soon after such a fall, so we canceled our weekend plans for Moonstone and Monterey! We'll try again next year!

I caught the Pebble Beach Tour and did Concorso Italiano with my Chapron bodied Citroen, that attracted a lot of attention, as they have been doing well at auction this year.  Then we just made it to the Pacific Grove Rally before they moved out & saw the Spyder contingent.

I'm thinking of trying the Carmel Concourse on the Ave on Tues. next year.......has anybody done that event?

Concours on the Avenue is well worthwhile - I've gone - suggest going early or late in the day to avoid the densest crowds, and parking challenges - I went last year (2012) as the cars were arriving (? I think 9 or 9:30) - this year's event lists 'open to the public' 10-5 - but 9-11 and 3-5 would be my suggestions for best viewing/parking.....RickJ

.

some folks have gone into Carmel also on Thursday to see the Pebble Beach 'drive' cars arrive and park - I understand it can get pretty crowded at 11 when the arrive.....but may also be worthwhile (and it's free!).

.

Jim - glad to hear your Mom's ok...sorry we missed you
