The eBay car really looks nice. It's an IM VW pan based car. The seller said it must 've been built in the mid 90s and I said it's gotta be older than 1984 (it has 4 drum brakes).
Also, he stated the paint job was worth more than 5k and that he's restoring 356s for a living. Unfortunately, he did not remove the rubber seals and fittings before painting, which I also criticized.

After that he really got upset, telling me I wasted his time etc.
... ?

Well, I find it very difficult to judge a car just by looking at pictures which I think will keep me from buying a car on eBay.

The German Tuev is indeed very strict but if you know the people there's no problem (as everywhere I guess)...

Anyway, I want to buy the speedster to drive around in Memphis, not Germany. It's way too cold here...

$19k for speedster that the owner couldn't be bothered to disassembled the "fittings" lights etc before painting? I would walk away from the car and hold onto my $19k until you get state side .
There are a good number of nice speedters that become available on a regular bases.
Also consider that the $19k isn't too far from a new Vintage speedy...

I'm sorry, but to claim to know anything about speedsters and to have rebuilt this car and then claim its a mid 90's car is outlandish at best and most likely intentional fraud. I think anyone with just a little research in a car that they own would know that it was a lot older then he is trying to represent.
Ed:

There are new Speedsters coming and going on the Classifieds section of this site all the time, and most likely from a member of the SOC whom you can follow with past posts to decide how good the car is before you even call the person the first time.

I would keep watching the ads posted and, if you decide on a used car rather than a new one, go with one of those here. Also, it never hurts to ask questions on here, as you've already done!

I agree.....Fred Kligman's car would be a very good buy (no charge for the plug, Fred!) as several other members have seen it and commented on it. He's not too far from Tennessee, either!

Beck's, yuk....too skunky for me. Rolling Rock is fine as a thirst quencher on a hot day. But the real good news, for ale drinkers at least, is the New Knoxville Brewing Company offering great traditional and India Pale ales....one other also that I don't recall. I've sampled the traditional and it's great. Maybe the distribution will reach Memphis before long if it hasn't already. I found if in "The Fresh Market." Ale.......yum!!
