Hi, I opened up the back and to my shock the lid on the oil tank has popped off and nowhere to be found. That explains the oil splattering out.
Can anyone recommend a good vendor their delivers quick to California?

You live in VW heaven- if you look hard enough (try this interweb thingie people keep telling me about)
there's probably a VW aircooled shop/store a short drive away!
Or a local auto salvage (junk) yard. Open the engine cover and twist one off. Big ol' cap that says "VW" on it.
If you cannot see the ground looking down into your engine compartment, then it should still be in there, rolling around someplace. Or whomever checked the oil level last has it sitting on their workbench or creeper, somewhere.

That's a serious case of blow by! There are nice aftermarket breather/oil caps assemblies - a taste of the madness! CB Oil breather cap.

Ordered the cap but will take 6 days to come. It's a pain cause I need to drive it. It could have fallen off and out of the car as its not a close system.

Your on the peninsula. Go to Jansen enterprises in Belmont. The old donsco location on harbor exit off 101. I am sure he has one to spare. Most likely its in the engine compartment. If you are unable to get one contact me and I will be in the city on Monday. I have one
how about some aluminum foil with rubber band for quick fix
Find a plastic lid that fits close, clean the metal surface well and secure it with silicone letting it dry over night( be sure no silicone gets into the motor) this will get you a few days of driving until the right cap arrives.

Again, you live in California (just about the center of the universe as far as VW's are concerned). Are you telling me you can't get off your duff and spend an hour or so to find a place to buy an oil cap? You'd rather wait 6 days so it can be delivered? You could have the problem solved this morning...
use a shop rag or old tee shirt cut up, with a hose clamp. then drive it. bill
... And fix the hole that let the cap fall out of the engine compartment.
