I'm thinking of buying a turnkey from serrano's because I'm tired of messing with my 1835. The one I'm looking at is running a 30pict carb. I am currently running a webber progressive carb but the air cleaner had to be modified to fit under the decklid. Wasn't sure if there would be clearance issues.
Thanks,
Scott

OK, here is the long frustrating story. When I got the car it started and ran but would not idle and smoked quite a bit. I got under the car and the block and one pushrod were leaking quite a bit of oil. So I changed the oil, adjusted the valves and replaced the pushrod tube with a springloaded one. It leaked much less oil but the car still idled poorly. I decided to mess with the timing. It has a 009 so I set the timing statically and then with a strobe revved to about 4000 with 30BTDC. Now the car was missing and spitting. I found out later that when I removed one of the spark plug wires I accidentally pulled off the part that screw onto the end of the spark plug so I wasn't getting spark on #2. I could have removed the spark plug and figured this out but the previous owner had an ill fitting engine tin so I couldn't get a socket on #2 spark plug. So I end up pulling the motor. I had a set of kads I wanted to use and I wanted to change to a stock oil cooler and fan shroud anyway.
Tearing the engine down I notice the sparkplugs are all fouled with dry black deposits. I have a set of mildly ported heads so I put them one along with some mildly used 92's that looked in better condition and put new rings on the pistons. I put the motor back in and put the kads on only to find they need a rebuild. They won't deliver fuel. So I put the weber progressive back on and get it running but now the motor still won't idle and smokes more than ever both in the engine compartment and through the exhaust. It is a blue smoke and smells of oil.
I have a 30 mile trip to work and would like to have a motor that I feel like I can depend on to get me there and back. So I'm hoping a turnkey from a reputable motor builder will be the ticket and end my frustrations. So much for the good deal I got on the car.
Thanks,
Scott
I'd say if the engine is going to be totally stock you can run the 30 PICT but it will still be under-carbed. Try to at least get a nicely built 1776; you won't regret the extra power. You can also re-build your Kads and use them or get a set of dual 40 Weber or Dells. One other caveat; Serrano's has good prices and parts but delivery times with them are very uncertain. If in a hurry check out these guys: http://www.steelbuggin.com/
