Bob, I'm running a 2.2L H4 Subaru with a 5 speed manual that is also Subaru. As far as smog goes, it is supposedly compliant. I say supposedly since smog checks aren't done in my county.
I've seen adapter kits with flysheels to mount the Subaru engine in rear just like the air cooled VW. It is nearly the same size - but suspect some # heavier. Retro fit in rear would seem easier than mid engine.
No doubt easier Wolfgang. Mid-engine placement requires chassis mods at the least. The benefit is the better weight distribution and the ability to use the standard Suby 5-speed or automatic without adaption.
