Bob, if you're in the market for anything over 40mms, i have to suggest looking into Dell'Ortos. I can't remember the last time I had a problem with my 45s. No kidding, with the exception of replacing the air cleaners a few weeks ago and the diaphragms on the banjo fittings a couple years ago, I haven't done anything more than clean the idle jets in about 36 months -- and Teresa did do some driving while I was gone last year (without incident).
I used to have a pair of 34mm Webers when I had a Type I. Not exactly hassle-free.
Peek Performance (Lanham-Seabrook, Maryland) usually has three or four sitting in the garage part of the shop. I just called them for you, and they don't have any 36s, 40s or 45s.
Dave (Peek) recommended looking on the Samba, Craigslist or eBay, but said he hasn't seen any intact Dells in a while. Apparently, this is a spring phenomenon. If they sit out over the winter, the bowls have a tendency to crack in the spring when they get fuel and heat in them again.
I hadn't ever heard of that happening, but he said that's why they're hard to find this time of year, every year. Shows what I know.
He did say that 36s are not as hard to find as anything over 40.
You might call your local air-cooled shop to see if there's word of a guy who maybe turboed a race car in the last few months, and could still have whatever large-bore carbs he/she took off still sitting on the bench.
There are a couple other local possibilities, but they move in the same circles as Dave. I'll ask around. What are you looking to spend?
I LOVE WEBERS!

No crying from me! It took a bit of time to figure them out, never really dealt with carbs, but now can almost tune them by ear. Hexbar linkage with heim joints solves 95% of the problem. Really, it ain't the Webers, it's the linkage in my case and a few others I've seen. Either that or improper setup, tuning, and maintenance. Believe me I've put in the time.
