If you really Luv the 356, Go visit Henry At Intermecanica .
You have your whole life a head of you, and if your that determened You,ll find a way to get your car exzacty the way you want it. from Henry.
I suspect he would take a minute with you .Please be sure, the nicer ones are over $30,Grand and they go up from there a Vintage kit like I got was over $9,000, If your short on money and patents get the rolling kit around $15,000

Or you can shop for a used one.
ok well i have some homework to do so far so where would i look for a used kit and this gentleman at Intermecanica is he liek a friendly guy caus eim a starving college student lol but id be willing to stop skool for a semester work full time to have this lovely autombile whatever it takes im just wondering if hes personable and wont ignore my questions
Dude, stay in skool! Werk on yur typing & speeling, it is patrt of the first impresshun you make with folks...

But seriously, at the same time think in terms of an opportunity to get next to the things that make you happy and can potentially make you money.

It might be you have a computer ability and can help sell parts for someone that has the parts but no computer smarts...or maybe you have artistic talent and can direct your energy to 356 artwork for those of us that are less inclined to draw our own decals, logos, etc.

Or maybe you start turning a wrench either at a trade school or in a recycle yard. My point is to keep your eye on the prize, but don't short change yourself.

You have lots of time to gather 'cool' stuff. What you want to look forward to is the ability to earn enough money to KEEP your cool stuff!

I find myself inclined to dispense some fatherly advice, which usually gets ignored, me being an old fart and all - just like I would tend to ignore the same type of advice at your age. I can remember being 18 and seeing pictures of a Speedster in a magazine and thinking "Damn, I want one of those!" I didn't get one, stayed in college, graduated, got married, got a job, bought a house, had kids, drove a station wagon, yada yada yada. And then I remember being 48 and seeing pictures of a Speedster replica in a magazine and thinking "Damn, I want one of those!" Then I got one. I'm not asserting you should follow the exact same path, my path has been far from perfect, but I think you must be in school for a reason - don't lose sight of whatever that reason is - you want to be able to afford that Speedster, and other things. So much can change in the life of an 18 yr old. Prove to yourself how much you are devoted to such a car - pester Henry to let you sweep the floor of his shop parttime, just so you can be around them. Maybe save your pennies and buy the cheapest piece of junk used or unfinished Speedster kit you can find, and learn how to fix and do everything needed to turn it into a jewel. Then years later you can be dispensing technical advice to guys like me.
Here is advise of a different slant - I went to college, got a job and worked my way up the corporate ladder to find out it wasn't worth it for me. I quit it all and started my own business. It is very rewarding. You might consider doing that.

If you are hungry and want something real bad - then find a legal way to make the necessary money. It is the hunger that motivates...

Just a thought.

Rich Dad, poor dad....sounds like a great title for a mini series. I can see it now, the rich dad gets all the breaks, while the poor dad doesn't get any. Maybe Peter Strauss and Nick Nolte could play the dads. And, we can have a bad guy (every good story needs a villain (sometimes called a mother-in-law). We could call him Falconetti...I like it!

Sorry, it's 10pm, I'm tired of reading and there is nothing on the boob toob.
Check on kits as I think now you can't even register or bring one into Canada. I was looking at a Lotus 7 kit and it was just flat out "NO".

As far as the advice goes if you want it find a way to get it. At your age I had some of my best times in my 67 Alfa Duetto, my 71 Opel GT, my 59 Mercedes 190SL (okay, this one was hardly on the road but I still had fun in if you can imagine what a 20 yr old can do with a 190SL at his disposal...). I went to school, worked 2-3 jobs and still had lots of time for my cars. And I paid for it all myself.

Of course my cars were not beauty queens but they were perfect for me. Look around, learn some wrenching skills and anything is possible.

I had/have friends with little more than part time jobs owning Aston Martins, Jags...even Ferrari's. It can still be done even on an 18 yr olds budget...especially if you stay living with your folks and don't pay rent. ;-)

I don't know what's with our dumb-ass Canadian federal government and not letting in kit cars etc. also, when I brought in my 911 pickup I had to pay GST, PST (total 14.5%) and duty (on a 30 year old vehicle!). Then, of course, there were all the various government fees, and finally it had to pass a provincial expection (more fees). We truly are a nation that is taxed to the max.

A Canadian joke: Canada is like a big cow; the mouth is B.C. and Alberta, the stomach is Ontario and Quebec and you can guess what the Atlantic provinces are.
Ron O:

My wife (bless her heart) took pity on me after seeing me work on my Speedster for over seven years and not getting it finished, so back in '99 for our 25'th anniversary she bought me a '67 Austin Healey 3000 for "something to drive until you get the Speedster finished". I decided to register it in Rhode Island (we had a weekend place here at the time) because they have no auto tax here.

I waited in line forever at the Registry of Motor Vehicles (there are only four offices in the whole state) and finally get up to the counter.

The cute young thing behind the counter smiles when I tell her it's really my wife's car, yadda, yadda, then looks at the description and says: "Oh! This is a COLLECTOR'S car!" "Yeah", I say, "Some people collect them, I guess". "No, it's on the LIST!" she replies...."we have to charge you 7 1/2% sales tax on it!"

I was obviously more than a little upset looking at having to pay the sales tax (PLUS, in Mass, where we lived the other 5 days of the week, it would've only been 5%) so she said a bit later as she got to the plate issuing part: "Hey, is this REALLY for your wife?" "yup", I replied, sure is." "OK, then, I have just the plate for it."

Plate issued: HRZ-99

I think, overall, it's all a female conspiracy.
