Hi Gang,

The pics attached are of my Fuchs wheels that came on my Speedster when I bought it. I want to know if they are authentic Fuchs rims off of a Porsche model car. The Fronts are 7X15 and the rears are 8X15. I want to send them out to have the spokes and outer rim ring polished or chromed. If they were knock offs I would probably sell them off and buy the knock off Fuchs already made the way I want them. If they are real Fuchs what is the estimated worth? They are nearly perfect, zero curb rash and perfectly straight.  Thanks in advance for your input.

Those appear to be authentic Fuchs forged aluminum wheels.  The number 911 361 020 42 is 8 x 15, weighs 14 lbs., and must be one of the rear wheels.  Likely a different number for the fronts, if they are 7 x 15.  Nice find!

You can Google "authentic Fuchs" or something similar and find data on samba and other sites.  Pretty valuable wheels, so you may want to determine value from a Fuchs expert before you refinish them.  It would be a shame to spend a few hundred refinishing them only to find out you decreased their value.

Thanks Jim, I was worried about the same thing. If the  wheels are real Fuchs and from what you said I believe they are then I better pause before sending them off to be messed with. I like the fact that I am saving up to 5lbs per wheel in unsprung weight when compared to the replica Fuchs wheels but I love the look of the chromed/Polished wheels. If it weren't for the extra weight I would consider selling the real Fuchs to raise money to buy the replica Fuchs that come the way I want them. I can buy the chromed replicas for about $1500.00 for the set. I think the set I have now as they are would bring double that price. How much loss of performance would I actually feel if I went with the heavier replica Fuchs Wheels?

They are real Jim and if you look close in pic 5 of your post you will notice just below the part number the FOX stamp is there.

Never chrome these as the value will tank. I picked up a set in fair condition for $1000 but yours are in great shape and still appear to have the original valve stem supports.

Go over to the Pelican site and search classifieds and and you'll get some value data. The trend awhile back was upgrading to 16's but it seems a lot of guys are going back to original configuration.

I did this on my 77S and went to 16 and put the 15's on the speedy but the 7x8x15 will be a challenge on my narrow body car. The 7x8's were mounted on the 78 Carrera and the mid year Carrears as the rear fenders were widened to accommodate the 8.

The offsets on Fuchs are also different even in the same rim width so some are worth more than others. There is a chart on Pelican and also on this site that shows the info on all these wheels.

I just fond this supplier of new Fuchs forged wheels. Her is the link to the price page. It appears new wheels like mine cost $690.00 and $700.00 each. I am not sure if my original good condition old wheels are worth more or less. I ay be willing to sell them. This vendors site has the weight of the wheels as this: 7X15 -11.97 lbs and  8X15-12.06lbs each wheel.

As you've already found out, they are real Fuchs- you can even see the little 'Fox' logo (Fuchs in German means fox) in the 5th pic. The 911 part #'s tell you the wheels are off of a 911- I mention this because there are 7 and 8x16's with 951 #'s with ½" more backspacing, which are 944 wheels.

As already said, chroming your wheels will lessen their value a lot, as once done it's a lot of work to return them to their original anodized state. I've heard it said the chrome can't be stripped without ruining the wheel; you'd have to check with a wheel shop that specializes in this. If the chrome chips or starts to peel (which some say inevitably happens with chrome on aluminum wheels) it's really hard to repair. Stripping the anodizing and polishing lessens the value only slightly in comparison, as they can always be re-anodized.

@Jimmy V.- Whether you'll feel the extra 4 or 5 lbs per corner will probably be somewhat subjective; I don't think it really matters that much until you're pushing the car close to it's limits. You may be happy with the polished (or chromed) replicas or you may always know in the back of your mind each corner is just that little bit heavy- I don't know you well enough to guess!

Fuchs wheel chart

You'll notice in the chart above that the 6" (15 and 16), 911 numbered 7x15, and 16 all have the same backspacing, with the 7's having the extra inch added to the outside of the wheel. The 6's will non flared Speedsters front and rear, while I have no idea how the 7's will do in front, but in the back will need either shorter (earlier) axles and tubes or 1" narrowed irs arms to have any chance to get under the fenders. I went a slightly different way, taking a pair of 6's to the local wheel specialist and widening them 1" to the inside, turning them into copies of the 7" 911R wheel (somewhat hard to find and guys want big bucks for them when you do!) listed above. These, mounted with 195's,  have about 1/8" clearance to the trailing arm and just fit under the fenders of my older IM with a single (modified swingaxle) spring plate inside the irs mounting bracket and type 1 drums.  To get the type 3 rear brakes (they add 5/8" track on each side) under the car as well I will need to narrow the trailing arms. And I ultimately want to put 205's on it- hmmm....

@MikelB- I don't think you're going to get the 8's under the rear unless you pie cut the fenders, dude! Have you tried putting the 7's with tires on the front? Please keep me in the loop- I want to know how you make out.

Here's the Rennlist link- https://members.rennlist.com/911pcars/WheelWts.html

It has the 951 7x16 listed (also an 11x15 listed that no one seems to know anything about). Note that some of the offset and backspacing #'s are wrong and the weights for the 16" Fuchs are goofy as well- they're only about a pound (or a little less) heavier than their 15" counterparts.

Hope this helps. Al

I had my original Fuchs 16's 6 & 7's  redone by Green's Automotive in Vancouver BC by IM.

They did a very nice job of polishing and repainting the centers in 2014-15 is was like $325 per wheel C$ funny money.

Jim you can probably keep yours and buy replicas already done and choose your look, just like changing shoes.

@Jimmy V.- a couple things- remember when looking at Fuchs wheels for sale that they don't always sell for the asking price, and the 2nd- if you end up taking the tires off your wheels, could you weigh them? Always good to have as much real data as possible. Thanks in advance. Al

@IaM-Ray- Green's made my 15x6's into R 7 replicas by cutting the backside lip off and adding a 1" band. They do excellent work.
