Just curious.Totally new to the 356 forum. Almost bought a 1960 coupe that had been restored..and was in good shape. But I really was concerned about long term drivability - and opted for getting another 289 Cobra replica (ERA FIA car) instead. At that time I had not seen a replica Coupe - or it might have swayed my decision.
Looking at the SAS Coupe - it looks to be an exceptionally well built car. Love the tube chassis (my ERA has 3" * 4" rect tube chassis + X crossmembers and is VERY rigid).
Just curious about the "mid engine" vs traditional rear placement. Does this pose any negatives in the "356 value"? What about the Subaru motors? Not familiar with the "idiosyncrasies" of the 356 replica industry. I know for example, in the Cobra replica crowd, a Chevy powered cobra is a much tougher sell than a ford powered cobra. Many people look at a Chevy powered cobra, as a car without a motor, as the would only buy the car under the condition the motor would be replaced.
The 356 replica industry seems to be quite different. The majority were based on VW motors, and not actual porsche motors (correct?), and using either a VW, Porsche, or apparently a Subaru - is OK and has no impact on maintenance of value?
Any views from the 356 community on the "lost jump seats" in the SAS car, due to the mid engine format? Does not appear to have any negative impact on the "resale" value of the cars, as they appear to be in demand, and few or no used ones on the market.
I see a lot of comments on JPS and Vintage - seem to be the most commonly owned cars. Where does Beck fall in the "quality" and resale maintenance rankings? I see they too build a rectangular tube chassis, and appear to have a nice car. And .. they have a coupe project in the works for the end of this year or 2012.
Appreciate your comments. Would love to be able to get a nice Coupe to go with the cobra!! (dream).
