Can I put a couple shallow sheet metal screws into the top of the shift-rod/clutch & accelerator cable tunnel?

I built a little glove box that fits between the seats and provides an arm rest just behind the e-brake lever. Still working upholstery but loving the concept. It's about 5" wide at the front, flares out at the rear for stabiltiy and to fit the widening curve of the tunnel before the back seat. It's just a 4" box with a hinged top that acts as an arm rest. The arm rest is 4" longer than the box, allowing the arm rest to overlap the e-brake adjustments a bit when it's closed, and is hinged at the back. The box is perfect for wallet, glasses, ipod, etc.

So can I sink a couple sheet metal screws through the bottom of my box into the tunnel without messing up something vital? I broke a sprinkler main once and, well, learned it's always better to ask! ;)
