I think the reality of driving and maintaining ancient technology doesn't always fit with the initial idea cruising around all over the place with a classic. I hate to say this, but a lot of people might be better off with a more modern powerplant (sacrilige, I know!!), like Subie power? Some people aren't tinkerers, and to drive an aircooled car you need to be...

I agree with Al, but I think it goes beyond air cooled engines.  Many of us would have loved to have a Speedster when we were young, but had no money for toys.  Now that we are older, with more money, the lure is still there.

The reality, however, is that a Speedster is primarily a good weather car.  The tops leak like a sieve, heat is only so-so, and air con is tough to do.  In addition, many of us have right seaters who won't spend much time in a 'vert.  All of the above, plus my encroaching senility, have pointed me toward my next replica rendition: an SAS Subi coupe.

A lot of people who don't know or have ceased to appreciate the sound of an aircooled engine get disillusioned. Life's not as easy with an aircooled and modern engines are largely start and go, these are start and hope, more often than not, go. I loved my beetle when I was 20, I love the look of a 356 (loved my E-Type too, but really a pain to drive with some corners - in London - I had to take 2 bites at) and now love the sound and look of my replica. Others sell them when the love fades, sometimes very soon.

Ron, we all think about it and I actually did it.  Remember I had a Vintage Super-wide Tub that I put the big engine in.  I then sold it and purchased a 07 Boxster.  The performance was awesome but even that thrill fades and I was left yearning for something else.  Something unique, and that led me back to a 356 Replica and Henry at Intermeccanica.  I went Subaru H20 so that's quite a bit different from the old aircooled tech and I never need to tweak (the engine).  There are still some other tweaks that come with a hand made car but thats stuff is small and expected.   I normally go through cars like I used to go through girlfriends but I a hoping that my current creation keeps my attention for many years.

Do you wear driving gloves so your hands don't blister while navigating those wild country roads?

Younger buyers like the retro look but most can't accept the ancient technology and the radio sounds like sh!t.

Older buyers get all nostalgic but can't handle the lack of creature comforts, have trouble getting in and out and are just too grumpy to deal with the Idiosyncrasies of technology as old as they are.

Those of us who keep them are just dim-witted "glass half full" morons who "get it".

Terry hit it right on the head!!!! The "dream" is different than the reality!! Reality is,you have to WORK on these cars......People are in such a different reality now...I get customers that come in with modern cars and go"I don't know why it broke down,it only has 120K miles on it".....come on,really?

These cars are throwbacks nd so are we.....I love my simplke car....only ONE computer (and yes it has broken, and I fixed it and it runs great)....I bet in the future they will outlaw carburetors!! (Oh,they already have!)

Now I'm the one spitting coffee all over my laptop....

now that is funny.....Thank you Mitch.....

Troy, not only do you do handy work on a tub, but your paintbrush skills

are also top notch......

thank you guys for starting my day off on a high note.....

Had a funeral yesterday, one this morning, and another on Monday....

All in their 80's, so it was time, if there is a time.....
