May have one in local area.... Will check it out and get back to you....
Curious if the 411/412 transmission is fully automatic? Perfect match to a T4 engine. Lots around as it was an unpopular rust prone car. Is it bigger than a T3? Sorry for thread drift.
Sorry to say "No type 3 automatic" tranny was found ....
Yes the 411 and 412 used the same tranny as do some bus's They used different ring and pinion's valve body's and governor's but other wise were all Borg Warner based trannys used by Audi I'm looking for parts transmissions for a spare flex plate converter a good used pump a decent planetary sprag and a few other parts.. I have 3 spare overhaul banner kits I'm still holding one for Henry at IM
I got 2 here I want to fix and test and then put up for spares. they are getting harder to find ( hence my quarries ) a lot a trike builder's love these and are hogging them up for trikes..
some were aluminum castings some were iron,Ive heard there interchangable, but havent ever done one.I used to rebuild a lot of automatic trans, but never had my hands on a vw.mostly american stuff,727,904,c4,c6,400,250,350,200.
It's a pretty simple beast biggest task is to clean one up before you take it apart the differential is usually cast iron. All the band and clutch carriers I have seen so far are aluminum .. Please keep me posted guys I need to get this done
I would like to get a modern day 5 speed auto&adapt it for mine, but dont know if there is enough room for a gear swap for rear engine.not sure I want to turn it into a mid engine as I would like to drive it one day.
Interesting topic.
My R & P is 3.44 and the 4th gear is .82 which seems like an overdrive, which it is.
Does anyone know the gear ratio for 5th gear in a 5 speed xmission and what R & P is usually used with a 5 speed?
it can be what you have or just about any other avaliable 4 gear raito.the great thing about the 5 speed is you can have the 5th gear like you have and then move the 3&4th gears closer to 2nd gear, so there isant a big drop between gears like there is with a stock 4 speed.
.82/3.44?
Wow. That's almost 80 mph at 3000 RPM with 185s. Is that correct, Jack?
Post some pic's of the 5 speed automatic you peeked my curiosity..
audi&porch tiptronic, there are probably a few others too.
Stan---I'm using 156s , not 185s so it's not 80 at 3,000. I do feel that with my gearing I get all the benefits of a 5 vspeed tranny with my 4 speed one. I don't get a big drop between gears either.
Plan on driving my car at Corn Daze.
Stan & Jack
I thought the tire radius was the dimension factor in the RPM/MPH equation...185 (or 165 etc.) is tread width on the asphalt, whereas the % of that determines the radius, or tire height.
So a 165x70 is about the same radius as a 185x60?...delivering about the same speed at the same RPM?
Hi Carl---In my last post I meant to write 165/15s and not 156/16's---I think you understood that tho.
I am using the same tire size as the original Porsche Speedster and that is 165/15
(5 1/2 "X 15")
I honestly don't think that a larger tire would work on my car as the space between my tire and the inside of the fender is so small.
Anyway 165X15. I just got a set of the Verdestein classics and think they are far superior to whatever else is available out there. These are made in the Netherlands and seem very well made. Look more like a Michelin than a Khumo or similar.
Yeah Jack, I knew what you meant.
You and others have sung the praises of the Verdertein tire before. I thought of them for replacing my 185/65 Yokahamas (the space between that tire and the rear fender cut out is about the width of my index finger!)...but the Verderteins are a bit pricey, so I found instead a set of Michelin 175 ZX's for the rear which will give me about an extra 10mm of clearance...Besides, the Michelins clean up 'blacker' than the Yokahamas!!
Jack:
I have Veredestein Classics on my VS as well, and I share your enthusiasm. I can't claim to have chosen them, they came on it when I acquired it from the previous owner.
I have friend into Subaru salvage we are looking at the 4 speed automatic and getting a K.E.P. adapter kit have another wanting to build a trike
Well! I at least have found a good supplier of The Automatics
( Quality Used Transmissions .com) There is also a company in the Poconos But I have heard back from them
