i realize this topic has been brought up before, but does anyone have a recommendation for an authentic sounding exhaust system for a 2020cc t1 motor? i've heard some good things about kirk's new system. i would definitely want something requiring little to no modification.

No George; it's just regular steel but you can get it ceramic coated too. It bolts right on like a stock muffler so there's no need for a separate header; I'd recommend going to 1-1/2" diam heater boxes or J-tubes to take advantage of its reduced back pressure. I have a new one, along with the heater boxes that I'll be bolting on when I get to install a new set of ported big valve heads (in about 2,200 miles). I got the 1-1/2" heater boxes for $189.95 per pair at CIP, which is a great price.

I'd say those mufflers work fine on pretty big motors since I know for a fact that SAW used that system and modified it for the Subaru 2.5 liter in Steve O'Brien's cabrio. Steve told me it works like a charm.
George, the stock VW system with or without that VS system is way too restrictive for your big stroker. You need a minimum of 1 1/2" headers and 1 5/8" may be better. See Tiger at A-1 (listed under shops). You can get modified heater boxes in several sizes.

Look at Justin Froehlich's VS.... he is using a CSP system that includes headers. heat boxes, and a dual exhuast system in 1 1/2" diameter. It looks stock, and gives good performance for 1776s up to a mild 2110.

My 2 cents worth. Do a search on exhausts and you will see that your system is much too restrictive. The VS set up won't help much...

George,

Tiger's system is sweet but it requires some modifcation to make it fit. It is a custom "one size fits all".

Mine had to be tweeked and some tin had to be trimmed. After it was installed I had to add a resonater and extend the tail pipe because it was too loud for my right seater and there wasn't enough tailpipe which caused some backfire issues. Fortunately I had a skilled muffler guy to get it set up right.

I will say it was worth the money and the effort. Power is way up.
Temps are down and I'm sick of the rain in Nor Cal.

Dale Bate's car has a variation of JimBob's exhaust if I'm not mistakin' and it is very, very authentic sounding.

The Vintage set-ups are way to restrictive. I went through three exhaust systems before I settled for the one on Butch's original Type 1 engine, now residing in Brian Bell's ride... It handles 130-135HP+/- and I recall it sounded more rogish than stock, so maybe that's not an option.
...an after thought on an earlier post in this thread re: GB's car. Was there a post about the car's new engine anywhere?

The estate got some good advice and went to the expense of setting up a more reliable engine. Maybe not as potentially powerful as GB had hoped for, but at the very least drivable and predictable and way past stock!

If it weren't for the fact I am certain George would come back from the grave, I thought about buying that speedster as I am entertaining a new one next year myself.

I'm guessing $50K well-spent.
Bruce,
Had tip custom made at the Stainless shop in CA. Company makes SS tips and mufflers. Found after the fact a 2005/6 Linclon Navigator exhaust tip is almost identical (3"x 5") to mine. Should cost less. Body and bumper was notched. Cup holder was another useful item I added.

No Vince, clean and sober 646 days. Not a record for me, but a good start... again.

Not trying to start any flame warzzz over car prices or values. We all know what George expected in his build and even from my anti-GB daze and perspective, I think his car was worth that $50K E-Z.

...and yes, I make good money when I work. It's just that I don't like to work as much as I used to!
