Hi all,

My buddy is getting married in NY and he’s had his eye on renting a 356 speedster as his wedding car. After much diligent research and calls I was told the wonderful folks at this forum may be able to help me.

I will not be able to attend a good chunk of his wedding events because I am expecting the birth of my first child at the same time ( I know this post sounds crazy, but i promise its all true haha). So I would like to help him at least secure this piece of the wedding that he has desired for a while. It would be mean so much to him on his special day.

please please let me know if you can be of any assistance, i would be eternally grateful.

I don't know of any OE or replica Speedster that has an automatic transmission.

I would suggest that he learn to drive stick, it's a lot more attainable than finding a car that doesn't exist.

Failing that, I'd bet he could rent a car and just do still shots with his bride in a nice setting.

I know of a "photo booth" VW Bus for rent if you want me to get you in touch, but not a Speedster.

Good luck.

Oh Stan !  I Know  !  I feel like a Beaver with 24" long teeth cuz I ran out of wood to chew.  I won't be trying to switch from a Suby stick to an automatic Suby but the idea intrigues me. It seem as if it would be possible. The only thing that comes to my mind is perhaps the auto trans  out of the 4 X 4 version Suby wouldn't work. Not even sure about that one.

My thoughts are that for those that want one, why not put a decent automatic in these cars. Especially if it's a shoe-in fit

Meanwhile, I have been toying away on what I've named the "Harlequin Chest " !  it's for a client and at their request, I have used 13 different woods ( hence the name). It will be used to store a collection of semi precious stones so I made each drawer have two lift out trays. The top lifts up and is for more stones or storage of extra trays. nearly 160 feet of 2" X 1/4" Poplar were used to make all the trays.   Joinery used were thru dovetails, splines, biscuits , and dowels.  I made the lock mechanism  too.

So this is what I do while I wait for the car stuff. Which is happening right now and I will have more to say about that later....all good too !

here's some photo's of the Harlequin Chest !

Ill take the info for the VW bus haha. Also want to thank ya’ll for all your assistance. Please feel free to message if anything else comes to mind.

Most Speedster EV's are manual 4 speed, however one could just throw tin 3rd and cruise and be OK.

As mentioned above you likely will not find an automatic Speedster available.  Henry did a few and we've got just one automatic Beck out there that I know of.  It was in NY for many years but last I heard it went to N Wisconsin or Minnesota...

@aircooled the short answer is yes, as I've just done it in our mid engine coupe recently.

The long(er) answer is that we're still working out a lot of the small electrical things as it is such an uncommon conversion that the harness guys didn't want to touch it.  I finally found one willing, and he did a great job, however we're having to go back through a lot of the trans controller wiring for some of the built in Subaru features that are initially controlled by 12v or by the ECU and then the trans controller takes over.  We have it fairly well sorted actually, but not quite done yet... close.  And let me clarify, it has been done before by others, but there was a lot of Mickey mouse stuff done to make it work and we wanted to just backtrack what the factory did and make it work like it was intended to by Subaru...

Thanks Carey.  Sounds like you're all for using the original Suby electronics. I agree.  I don't know about other cars but a Subaru seems to have an intense amount of electronic communication between the engine and transmission in order to get everything working smoothly and properly.

Do you agree that in a Spyder, it would be fairly easy to install a Suby automatic transaxle along with a Suby engine ?  To do this in a Speedster or coupe seems majorly intense !.......Bruce
