I know this has been covered before, and somebody posted a link to calculate speed and rpm with various gears and tire sizes. I found this link in the archives:

www.actionimport.com/Tech_Files/gear_ratio_computer.htm

which does a good job of calculating- if you know the available gear ratios.

My question is this: is there a web link to a list of the available 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and ring and pinion ratios for type 1 and bus transaxles? Or better yet, a speed/rpm calculator with available VW gear ratios, VW r/p ratios, and tire sizes already programmed in... I'm working on ironing out an engine/ trasaxle build, and I'd like to select gear ratios based on projected h/p and torque figures. I'd like to have a list of everything that is commonly available.

Any help would be appreciated.

Been looking a while for this info myself. I've seen it somewhere, but can't remember where. It was a listing of all the different gear tooth combos that fit together for each set of gears. Worse comes to worse, checkout old issues of "Hot VWS and Dune Bugies". They frequently list the gear specs for feature cars.
I found a link to the stock VW gear ratios- Beetle, Type 3, and bus.

It doesn't have a calculator, but if I plug the numbers in the calculator at the link above, it works fairly well (although the RPM figures are in 1000 RPM increments). The problem is, there isn't very good information on available aftermarket gears. I talked to Rancho, and there is a 1st and 2nd gear shaft available with a 3.10 1st and a 1.93 2nd (instead of a 3.80 and 2.06 respectively) for much closer spacing of 2nd and 3rd which is pretty desireable to me since 1st is really pretty useless in my transaxle anyhow. Anyhow, the chart doesn't list that as a possible combination, so I'm still looking for all possible permutations of gearing for the stock transaxle. Any help?
Stan:

You might try contacting the folks at Rancho transaxles in Anaheim. They offered a pretty wide variety of ratios for each position when I was talking with them a (long time ago) about building up my tranny.
