It all depends on how well they are anchored; mine are just bolted to the pan with some large washers.

I won't be the first to mention that safety is pretty relative in these cars. That said, I would probably be OK with driving around town with my offspring in the back, maybe not on the freeway though.
Good point, it is also MUCH too high to use if the top is up. I did squeeze a friend back there once, for a short ride.

I bought a '95 Cobra with the Saleen Speedster package from a friend once, he and another buddy of mine brought the car home from the club with TWO girls stuffed under the rear deck, so anything is possible.
Anything is possible if you really want it. I did weld a structure beneath the rear seating area in order to secure the belts. Though my kids a getting old they still manage to fit back there. Not for long rides. Log rides I can carry two kids one adult driver. I usually am asked how do my kids fit in the back. I tell them I cut off there legs... they fit fine then. You should see the looks I get.
