Check to see that the wires are still connected and not shorting out against one another. You could remove the switch and try cleaning it. It's just a spring loaded plunger that gets depressed by the shift rods in the trans. It could be just gunked up a little....or just replace the switch.
You can see the plunger from the inside of the nosecone in this pic. It's the ball looking thingy sticking out in the lower left of the nosecone.

The wires seemed to be secure. The issue started when I put a shift kit in and finally got the trans into reverse. When it was assembled, someone used bolts as spacers under the shifter plate and the pin at the bottom of the shafgt was over the top of the "bowl" thus allowing it not to seat properly.

The shift kit helped resolve the pin problem, but that is when the lights started staying on.
