It's all over!
I have to sell my Spyder. I have three kids and need to get a four door truck.
Yeh right!
Truth?
Just picked up my dream car. The wife (Bless her heart) backed my move to purchase a NEW 2006 Carrera 997. Yes it is a manual tranee!
Bad news is that the Spyder has to go.
I love the spyder although in reality, more babes look at you in the Spyder than the 911.
But hey! I'm 6.1 and 240 lbs. I feel sorry for the Spyder ever time a I ask it to hall my fat a$$ around.
If any one is interested please contact me. Hugh@clearcomnetworks.dot. com
Spyder is BECK 550, 2000 year. 23,000 Km.Very Very nice condition. It has the 2175 motor (runs great)and I did have Greg put his sweet vintage exhaust on it. Indiana title, I've never botherd to register it in CA.
Has both covers.
Looking for around $ 22,000.00 I think that is fair.
Pictures? Sorry I can't get this attachment to work.
So look on Spyderclub.com or email me.
Thanks

Hi guys,
I just took delivery of a Beck 550 (1999 or 2000 I beleive) I love it!
It goes like a rocket and makes more noise than by buddies Harley!
I'm told it has a 185hp motor but I can't verify that claim. It obviously has a very hot cam as it sounds like it's running on two cylinders until 2,600 rpm. Then all hell breaks loose!

You just got it??? But I understand wanting the Carrera.
Stefan
Thanks, I was woundering what was up. I think some guys on these forums have a little to much time on their hands. May be they should stick to surfing the porn sites like the rest of us.
As for selling my Spyder. I get the feeling I'm looked at as a traitor! between this site and Spyderclub. You know like the dude who traded his Birkinstock's for Nike!
Hugh,

Right after I bought my Spyder in 2003 there was a flurry of "Spyder sell-offs" on the site. Another "newbie" on the site asked what was going on with all the folks selling off their Spyders and Spyder Mike replied that most people buy a Spyder, keep it for 1-2 years and then sell it.

"Nah," I thought, "That'll never happen in my case. I've always wanted one of these things and now that I have it, I'm holding on to it."

Well, here we are a year and a half later and my car is up for sale. I've got my eye on a low mileage 993 Carrera 2S.

I guess there are "Spyder owners" and then there are S*P*Y*D*E*R O*W*N*E*R*S and I'm one of the former.

Onward, through the fog!
Terry, I guess that makes sense. I think it is hard for me to imagine getting a nice Spyder and selling it. I would be one of those that also says, "I am never selling mine", but things do change. Fortunately, that is how I bought my Speedster. Someone decided to sell after only 2 years. Aren't these great cars though.
Shawn,

Yes, they are wonderful cars. Every time I drive mine, I find myself with a silly grin on my face.

The only reason I am selling is that I can afford only one sports car and owning a Spyder doesn't give me enough drive time. It stays parked from late fall through early spring and when the summer is like ours was this year (Rain every day of the month of July), it doesn't get driven much at all. In fact, I have put less than 100 miles on my Spyder this summer.

I want a sports car that I can drive daily, drive to work or to the store, not have to worry about an afternoon thunderstorm fillng it with water, and then jump in and take the long way home through the mountains if I want to. I have to plan to drive the Spyder and owning a car I have to plan to drive just isn't practical for me.

And so it goes...

TMc

Yep...socal where I'm at...would be no problem driving nearly any day of the year (assuming one doesn't mind the wind in winter...decent jacket and maybe a hat wouldn't be bad, I'd bet).
However...I'm talking from inexperience mostly (though did have a convertible supra that was a daily driver), as I've yet to make the spyder purchase. Thinking of doing so with a bit of an equity loan...thinking that they're really not that bad of an investment (well, not really an "investment per se as it's not likely to appreciate in value...just hold better than the average fun car). At least that's the angle at which I'm looking at it and planning on presenting such to my wife.

With the talk though recently about people selling after short periods of time...what would people say would be the main (most frequent) reasons for doing so? Hoping to go into such making an intelligent decision.
Mike,

My experience and observations over a period of years indicate that one should never, ever buy a specialty car on an investment basis unless you have years and years to wait for the value to appreciate or unless it is for sale at well under it's current market value.

Similarly, never expect to get your money out of "improvements" you have made on a car. In most, but not all cases a $20,000 Brand X with $15,000 worth of "improvements" on it is still a $20,000 car, particularly when those improvements are brakes, suspension, and go-fast items...And you labor is worthless.

Again, this is my experience, others' may vary.

TMc
Yeah, I realize as such...I guess I used the word "investment" in error...for lack of a better term. Basically, I meant that I could have some fun with it for a number of years and then turn around and sell without a ton of depreciation...unlike many other cars out there these days. A good example is my supra. Bought it used for 17,900 with 48K mi, sold it 3 years later with 130K mi for 14,000. Worth my $3,900 in fun.
I have had mine for 15 years now. The only reason I still have it is that it is car #7 and hardly gets used.

people buy them and have great expectations. Then the noise, the finicky nature of them and the ride make them less than what they thought. some still get off on it and keep them. others want a smoother, quiet, no hassle ride.

quickest ownersship to sell goes to Guido. I think he had his a couple of months.
I've had mine since June 14, 2005, just over three months. I bought it because I wanted to drive a "vintage race car" on the street. I got more than I thought I would and plan to keep this car for a long, long time. It's finicky, raw, cantankerous, demands attention, needs constant fettleing, is high maintenance (compared to my other cars), etc. in other words it is EXACTLY what I expected, and wanted. It's so "right", in my humble opinion.

On another note, Guido's gone??? Gee, I miss him sooooo much....
I am getting, or at least I better get, since I wired transfered money this morning, a Beck that was built in 1994 by a guy who seems to be the real deal when it comes to tool and die work. I fell in love with all the modifications he made to the standard beck kit. The list is long and glorious and I am going to make sure I get all the information written down so that I can speak somewhat intelligently if anyone asks me. He says he based his extra work on photos of real spyders. I still haven't gotten all the details of delivery worked out yet, but I hope to have it for sure by 10/7/05. In time to enjoy Minnesota's best 2 weeks of the year (sometime in October typically).
