ok So I have had this new 550 build in my garage from Carey now for several months and my other projects are complete enough that I'm embarking on finishing it.  A few questions to the group as I'm not really a VW guys, so I'm learning a bit about early german engineering here.

1) I'm installing headlights and have this rubber seal.  Can someone advise how this is ideally installed. It seems to mount fine without it, but Carey and team included it for a reason

2) I don't have the engine built yet, but do have the swingarm transmission ready.  Should I mate up engine and tranny then drop them both in or should I proceed with mounting the tranny and rear suspension now.  Just looking to assemble in the order that makes the most sense.

Prob more q's to come.  I thought I'd post here before I give Carey a call.

1) the headlight gasket is a stock headlight ring to body seal, common to the early beetle and 356.  They are intended to install with the large flat against the body and one of the angled edges under the edge of the headlight ring, the other angled edge exposed.  They are MUCH more of a beauty ring than a weather seal, and personally I like them better installed backwards, with the large flat exposed and the angle pressed against the corner of the headlight ring and body.  Happy to shoot some photos if you send me an email, it will make a lot more sense in a photo.

2) aircooled you install the engine and trans separately, trans first.  Leave the nosecone bolts loose and the bell housing bolts out completely so you can jockey it around during engine install, just makes it easier.  Watercooled you mate them together and install as one.

Are you using our cable shifter with the replacement nosecone?
