2004 Beck Speedster
FOR SALE
$26,000
805-709-8455

This Speedster recreation was built in Brazil and sold by Specialty Edition, Inc. as a Beck Speedster in 2004 (#83). I recently remodeled the car to replicate a 59 Porsche Carrera. The Carrera model had very little trim and the wheels were plain. The cars were meant to drive to the track, race and drive home. The original 58 Carrera 1600 GT had a 4-cam engine that produced about 110 HP. They also made pushrod engines that produced about 75 HP. This car has a tube frame with VW front and rear suspension. The running gear is a VW transaxle and engine. The engine has been bored and stroked with a displacement of 2180cc. It has a 110 cam with the dual Webers.

Guys, sorry to bring this thread up again, but I just wanted to say that Thomas in Hawaii finally got the car off the boat and loves it. He had a problem with the steering, but has since corrected it. I think it had to do with towing it.

Lane, don't tow your Beck. I think my towing it did a job on the steering box. Email me and I will explain.
I am not totally sure that flat towing the Beck did a job on the steering box, but here are the details. When I first towed it about 500 miles last summer, I had a lot of play in the steering after the trip. I tried adjusting it but it didn't help that much, so I replaced the box. That took care of most of the play. I recently towed it again, about 200 miles, and the guy I sold it to said the play was so bad he could barely control it when he picked it up. When I unhooked it at the delivery point, I drove it for only a block or two and I didn't notice any play. The new owner replaced the box again and said all was fine. I feel really bad that I may have sent him a bad box. Not having personally experienced the play the second time, I can only go with what he said. That is where I draw the conclusion that maybe it's best not to tow a Beck. If I still had it I would either trailer it or drive it.

Alan, if I still had it I would try the washer. Thanks.

Maybe you guys should touch base with Carey and see what he says about flat towing a Beck.
Coulda been a loose pitman arm. Just a half flat loose can cause things to get sloppy. Ask me(and Lane) how we know.

I can see how towing could cause this as the process is reversed with the wheels exerting pressure on the arm to turn the box. If the arm was just a tiny bit loose to start with, the towing could possibly loosen it further, making it worse AFTER the tow.

Aloha everyone, this is Thomas, the new guy. I am a full time foreign car mechanic by trade, and will give you my opinion of this.
The box had so much play that the steering wheel had 6" plus of back & forth movement before the wheels would move.
I simply bought a TRW/OEM Brasil box for $110.00,had it in the car in about 45 minutes, and the steering has 1" of play.
IMO when towing the car the wheels rock back & forth/left-right and HAMMER the steering box gear and basically destroy it. I would definitely recommend towing on a flatbed! Aloha
Wanted to add,I love the "Dubstub"!
Hey Lane!
It is my goal to replace my speedy as soon as I am financially able. Even have my wife's seal of approval!!!! Still it will be a little while yet.

I'm only 40 minutes from Carey and have to keep myself from being a pain in his butt by visiting and leaving pools of drool on all the cars in process ;-).

I'm sure hoping I can hit Carlisle this year. I need a speedster fix! I'm sure there will be a few right seats open.

Bill, if you ever want to upgrade your RV - I'm your guy . . . .
