A weddle gear set with the profile ground gears is close to a 1,000. A FTC or Erco mainshaft  may be slightly less. I just ordered a 1st thru 4th gear set for a customer and slick shift rings, and after welding third and fourth the parts wer. Close to 1,600.

The after market mainshaft setup is really for those who want to holeshot the guy at the stoplight and likes to do burn outs (not this group)

the only advantage would be to build a box with a higher first gear rather than a lower first gear. Higher meaning smaller number like a 3.44 first gear oppose to the stock 3.80 or 3.78. Those custom main shafts usually have a closer ratio second gear.  One upgrade we do is offer a ground 3.78 main shaft to use with the keyed gears rather than the later splined gears.  I can go on and on and confuse you some more.

I am still an advocate for the five speed. A berg box if you have a swing axle and either porsche box or berg with the irs. The berg box gives one more options in ratios with out going broke compared to the porsche box.   Call me if you want

I did the $3000 transaxle, then did it again with a 3:44. I've got the world's most expensive VW 4-speed, and it isn't markedly better than yours.

Stock gearing and a 3.44 is where the smart money is.

I was told by several people who were in the know that I would not be happy with the 3:44 setup or doing the custom 1st through 4th. I have the custom setup on paper and have the 3:44 in the car. IMO the higher gears work so doggone well with the bigger motors. I'm not a burn out kinda guy anyway.

The stock setup with a big motor feels a little too much like 4x4 low to me!

I agree completely. A 4-speed is a compromise. Most guys build a transaxle, and gear it to drag-race, and then wish for a 5th gear so they aren't spinning 5K RPM down the highway.

I did a 4-speed to "save money" (insert maniacal laughter here), and then proceeded to do it 3 times. I found (like everybody else), that four speeds are not very many (one, maybe two short of ideal).

In the end, I made the compromise that fit my needs. Essentially, I gave up first. I've got the 3.44, and a custom (long) first and second gearset. It's fine, and perfect for the kind of GS/GT driving I do. If I autocrossed, I'd do the 915, no matter what it cost. If I drag-raced, it'd be exactly the opposite of what I would need. I don't do either, and what I've got works great.
