Just bringing this back up on the radar screen again today. As mentioned earlier, I have an alternate car in mind which would require me to trade this, my 911 and possibly the bug. MAYBE.

By relieving myself of the Speedster, my negotiations on the other car would obviously change and might allow me to keep my 911. As many of you have noted, the running gear on the Speedster, its degree of sorting out (a point sometimes over-looked by the uninitiated), its overall great condition and the extras added over the past several years, makes this a tremendous bargain. For any neophytes considering having a car built I would recommend that you take a hard look at this one.

Jake Raby has noted on another site that this engine would cost $20,000 today to build. The Rhino-cased, Rancho transaxle (appx. $2,500) is custom-geared to take advantage of the power. A heavy duty copper faced clutch was also installed during engine installation. The 48 Dellortos have been mostly trouble free. The Tangerine Racing 1 5/8" header system ($2,500) helps it breath well and sound good. Highway cruising can result in 23mpg, with a heavy foot bopping around that will decrease down into the 16-18mpg range, but then, that's where the fun comes into play.

Here's a half-hearted land speed record, hardly stretching its capabilities:

And please note, despite the capabilities, I have never really abused this car.

Some of the other members have noted that I drive like an old man (which I am).

Last winter, Carey Hines at Special Editions installed a first class breather box with braided uil lines and additional VDO gauges which include a oil temp, oil pressure and CHT-they match the main gauges as for style. Xenon bulbs and ballasts ($300) were added for better night driving. The Nardi Anni 50 wheel ($700) also has the SE billet adapter and a Porsche horn button (really the only Porsche ID on the car). My custom bumper system (bumperettes as I call them, rather than nerd bars) might not be liked by all, but retro-fitting bumpers would be an easy task. I'd even consider negotiating those items if you don't like them. And don't overlook the engine bay that is clad in aluminum. Rust and natural Cocomats are a welcome addition as well as the red Crow lap belts. The Yokohama 55/185/15's have 2 seasons on them, plenty of miles left.

It's a head turner at car shows with many comments about the EIGHT spark plugs. It has had many an observer scratching their heads. The paint is in fine condition and the hood straps seem to be well liked by the female population for some reason?

In closing, the negotiations for my alternate car will be starting in earnest over the next week or so...time is running out on this bargain. Think about it, this could be yours to enjoy.

I registered my not-yet-complete Specialty Auto Sports replica in CA on Jan. 4, 2013.  The process worked, but I had to politely let the DMV manager at the office I used what the law was.  My first visit was unsuccessful, but, since I was polite, she took my cell number.  She called me later in the day to say I should return to complete registration.

I tell that story as an illustration.  There are 35 million cars & trucks registered annually in CA, and only 500 specially constructed vehicles, using the SB100 legislative bill.  That means it is very unlikely that the clerk you deal with has ever completed a registration on a specially constructed vehicle.

I think you're in the Santa Clara valley.  Check with some of the Cobra guys nearby or other rodders about which office and which people in those offices know their stuff regarding replica registrations.  A visit or call to that person will save you lots of headaches in the future.  Best of luck and let others know how it goes.

Thanks Jim, Your right I am in Santa Clara. I wondering if they'll just let it go as a 1957Chamonix?

LAST CHANCE TO BUY THIS THING BEFORE I CLOSE THE DEAL ON THE NSX.

As usual with any car deal, we're very close on the trade for the NSX. I'm willing to let both my 911 and the Speedster go, in trade for the NSX. The broker is skeptical on what he can get for the Speedster down the line.

A last minute offer on my Speedster for less than the current $32,500 would be considered by me, but obviously, for those of you in the know, I will not simply give the thing away, so don't bother with some rediculous low ball. Plus it would need to be done quite quickly.

FYI only.

Rich,  I hope you don't take this the wrong way but have you driven a new Corvette?   I don't have a clue on the NSX car but I suspect it might be as much or more then a 2014 Corvette.  I say this as a fellow who NEVER had much for Corvettes.  The new C7 is just a totally different breed of cat.  I bought a slightly used on for $58,000 and I really really like the car.  Surprising not for performance (which it certainly has plenty of) but for the overall quality and value and for the COMFORT.  The car handles like it's on rails and rides better then the 2014 Camaro I traded in for it.

I apologize for possibly butting into your business and hope you take this as one car lover to another.  And again I don't know a thing about the NSX.

As to your replica if I didn't have one.....   Some one on the waiting list for a new one should really consider here.

John,

I have no problem with opinions. Corvettes have no real interest to me, despite the bang for the buck. Part of the allure of this trade is the instant gratification of reducing my small stable of cars and coming away with one nice and interesting (to me) car.

The deal is close, but I'm throwing this out here just to see if it just might work for any interested party here and possibly give me a slight bit of negotiaations with the broker.

I know it's a long shot.

Got it,   I had the same opinion on the Corvette.  Never any interest at all.  Drove a couple just on a whim a time or two. They didn't do a thing for me.   Rough sorta crude and not especially attractive in any way.   Have a friend who has over the years had 7 of them and he drove his 2014 to the office one day.  I found the car attractive and he let me drive it.   That did it. I've had Rx7's Datsun Z cars Honda S2000 and a Porsche 911 so I am not entirely inexperienced but I have no knowledge of the NSX (just never had the opportunity)  In my opinion the new Corvette is just not to be compared to any of the previous cars.  After 50 years they seem to have FINALLY gotten it right.  Or at least right for me.   New car warrantee is nice as well.     I understand about opinions and cars.   They change from time to time as well.  I've had a BUNCH of cars so I am proof of that. AND maybe if I'd have the chance to drive the NSX I'd fall in love with that one as well.   It is a very interesting car technically.   Sorta of a Japanese Ferrari.  I get that as well.  Sometimes DIFFERENT trumps all else.   Maybe that's why we buy 356 replica's.
