Hello fellow maniacs! I went to take my Beck in for a alignment since it was pulling to the right and found the caster 4 degrees off,making the right side pull.
My alignment wizard said the upper control arm is possibly bent and needs replacement.
My question is; "what year control arms are used on the Beck speedster?" It is a ball joint suspension,and I *think* it is a mid 70's suspension.Am I correct? Thanks!

The eccentric modifies both camber and caster at the same time. But for any given camber setting, there are only 2 possible caster settings (except at max camber). Think of it like a clock face with a vertical line representing your camber setting (12 o'clock is straight ahead). As you change camber, the line moves horizontally across the clock face. Thus the camber setting crosses the clock at 12/6, 1/5, 10/8, etc. If your camber is set to the 1/5 line, then your caster setting is either at 1 or 5. If it is in the 1 o'clock position, changing it to 5 will add caster. If it is in the 5 position, changing it to the 1 position will remove caster.

4 degrees is about 1/4 inch front/back movement at the eccentric hole.
Yes! about the eccentric. You want the ball joint hole to be toward the back of the car, on both sides. If one side is off after adjustment and following the previous sentence, you can get a pair of aftermarket eccentrics. I would just use one on the side that doesn't have enough caster, as long as the first side is on the money. If camber is identical on both sides, caster should be close, but not required to be exactly the same. If the beam isn't 100% square, the aftermarket eccentric will get you a couple degrees closer. cip1.com sells them, among others.

Have you ever heard of a radial tire pull? I have seen it many times, swap the tires left to right and see if the pull goes away or goes to the other side. It DOES happen!

I did a search on the Samba,and found that many Beetle owners have the same issue,and afre told the caster is not adjustable.
It is just "modern times" and the new guys with all this modern equipment can't do a alignment on a Bug balljoint suspension since they don't do them at all anymore!
Well,I kind of "fixed" it myself.
There is a slight pull to the right still when hands are off the wheel,but now I do not have to correct as much and I can hold the steering wheel straight and it goes straight. Before,as speed would increase I would have to hold the wheel 1-2 inches off center to correct for the right side pull.
What I did was take the dvice of my garagemate,and he mentioned I should add negative caster to the driver side and adjust toe after.
I did this and gave myself 1/8" toe using a measuring tape!
This seems to make it drive a lot better,very pleased with myself.
Camber looks good,but I really wuold have to put it on a alignment rack to see.......Aloha!
