In dual or single filament, depending, will work just fine.

The managers of most auto parts stores have a good knowledge of what works, the counter help knows more about pimple cream and iPhones. Walk on in and ask the old guy who looks like he ready to bolt, he's got all of the info that you need.
Doug is right, same color as the lens.

Whether you get 1156 or 1157 depends on the bulb you are replacing.

1156 is equivalent to a single filament bulb. There is one contact in the bottom of the socket.

1157 is equivalent to a dual filament bulb. There are two contacts in the bottom of the socket.

I think with any incandescent bulb you run the risk of melting the lens if it is bright enough to be effective.
It would seem that incandescent bulbs with the correct base and enough wattage to be seen will generate enough heat energy to melt the lenses.... Remember, the original lamps were 6 volt, and a lower wattage.... The LED packages now available would seem to be the best bet.... You can make your own from Radio Shack components, but its not cheap that way either....
