Beetle question; window winders

Question is with regard to a '71 SB. The dude whose car I'm tinkering with at the moment decided to put some other-than-stock speakers in the door of his Bug. The window winders didn't clear, and he kept using them anyway -- so they broke off like they all do.
I've never replaced any before unless I used Vise-Grips in their place. This guy wants replacements with a little more clearance from the doorskins than the 1/2 inch or so he's going to get with stockers, and I can't seem to find the old swan-necked type that came with my Rabbit.
Any ideas? Links?

I recall that the newer winders for Rabbits that you mentioned fit older Type I's. I know because that's what I installed in my Karmann Ghia when I couldn't find the older style. At that time I bought those parts at the VW dealership and that's the replacement the parts counter guy recommended at the time. I'm pretty sure you can get those replacements from any of the VW parts suppliers in Hot VW's magazine.

Ok the 2 model years that are merged to make this mod are 1968 and 1972 or newer regulators.

It sounds like you have earler regulators installed. If so just buy a set of 1972 regs.

The 1972 has a longer winder shaft and the intire crank mounting bracket is swaped fron one regulator cable frame to the next, to get you the clearance.

I had make the same mod, when I put one peace windows in my 1972 superbeetle I used 68 reg and the 72 shaft mounts.

You drill them apart swap the parts as needed the bolt ribbit or spotweld them back together. I hope this is what you needed to know.

Why not add power windows - there is a kit made specifically for bugs - if I recall it was about $250 for 2 doors. JC Whitney may have them cheaper too.

Wolf - I just forwarded your suggestion to the car's owner. He says he'll look into it. I gave the car back to him yesterday with a pair of the Rabbit winders from Crazy Ray's scrapyard.
