I would like to propose that for the 2011 annual SOC West Coast meet, that we choose a different venue (location) and also a different weekend, this would allow the So Cal. members to attend the Kit Car event that now takes place in Pomona, and pushing it up by a month or so also insures better weather conditions....Hell we could do it the same weekend as the Carlyle event, so that we are all having fun the same weekend....
We keep our fingers crossed for good weather, when there is actually no reason to keep doing that...

I don't have any real complaints about Morro Bay, but there are so many places to chose from along the Central coast, and I hear from different members that a change is due...They just don't have the balls to raise the issue, so I'm doing it....

Dusty, you appear to be the master at putting these things together,
what is your opinion....

as an example...Best Western Cavalier in San Sim Simeon has great rooms with fire places, direct access to the beach with fire pits, a full on restaurant with a banquet room...Located next to Hearst Castle...been there and it was great...look it up on the internet..

how about some of you chiming in here...

Let's let Vince and Gerd plan it. It would be so cool. We just get so drunk on the beach, we lay there and the tide takes us out to sea. Man, does that sound like a hoot! Or, better yet, we could turn our tubs up-side-down and have a boat race. No, that wouldn't work, we would be passed out. Oh wait, bumper cars in the surf. This could work. We would just wait until morning to see who won. I guess the winner would be the one that didn't sink. I gotta go. I need somemore wine.
Hearst Castle is one of my company's locations (food/cleaning).

Another a bit further up the coast is Asilomar (another of my company's locations). That one is Pacific Grove/monterey Bay, adjacent to Pebble Beach/17 mile drive.

Just throwing some ideas out there. As an employee, I don't get any special discounts by myself, but I would know EXACTLY who to talk to arrange a group event (and discounts are common for group events).

angela
Vince - you are a trouble maker!

I think it would be fun to mix it up and try a new location next year. San Simeon, Cayucos, San Luis Obispo (I think this would be my first choice - its a bit warmer there) are all great places nicely located in the middle of the state.

Angela, Asilomar is beautiful! I think it might be a little too far north for the So Cal caravan to get in at a decent time. The ~250 miles to Morro Bay took the group 7 hours from Seal Beach and the distance to Asilomar is more like 400 miles But, others please speak up, because the distance might be fine, I may just be a sissy??? And, what do you do? What other cool locations do you have an in with?!

Maybe we could even show the cars like you guys did when you met in Paso. Over dinner some of us were talking and realized we didn't know which cars belonged to who and heard about great stuff people had been doing to their cars but we never had time to see it in person.

Since I currently have lots of time on my hands I'd be happy to request proposals from various hotels and restaurants and see what we can come up with.

Jen

EDIT: I just saw that Will is down in Carlsbad and is all for Asilomar. I guess I'm weak when it comes to long drives ;-)
Well, this didn't take long. It's only Monday after the best road trip we'll have all year and someone is complaining. What's next on the bitch list, tough chaffing dish chicken? Try again, we did that one last year.

Vince -- San Simeon??? Windswept, cold, and desolate San Simeon? There is a reason they have fireplaces in the rooms. There's also a reason it's a great place for a honeymoon; its in the middle of nowhere, with nothing else to do but stay in the room by the fireplace.

I guess there is truth in saying "you can't please all the people all the time". But I know I had a lot of fun at Morro, and if there was anyone who was "at risk" of a disappointing weekend it was me.

My suggestion: Don't screw around with a good thing.

Mark

PS: I do miss the parade and candy-toss though. I remember after last year that a few outspokens felt the little hometown parade was too hokey for them, and complained we could be doing "something else" instead. As I recall, the parade (and an important goodwill entertainment contribution to the folks of Morro) was over by 10:30. This year we took off on our first event starting at . . . that's right: after 10:30.
Because of a few outspokens, a lot of hometown kids missed out because their little parade was hokey.
Mark,

I don't think anyone is complaining. I know I had an awesome weekend this year! I think we're just generating discussion and considering options. You're right, it's impossible to please everyone, but it's good to get feedback from everyone. I haven't spent much time in San Simeon so it's helpful to hear that you think that it will be cold and windy there - that does not sound like a good time.

Jen

Mark, I'm not complaining, I had a great time, I'm actually easy to please. I'm voicing what others have mentioned. Perhaps San Simeon was a bad example due to location.
We meet, enjoy each others company for a few days, it doesn't get any better than that...
As far as the kids in Morro Bay go, F them...I'm not much of a kid person anyway, having raised 4 of them..but I will go anywhere the group decides and it IS a group event. If Morro Bay is the place, I'll be there, but lets discuss what the group wants as a majority, and we should start the process now...Shit, it will most likely take 3 months to decide anyway with this group....There are so many places in central Calif. Whats the difference where we go, as long as we get together.. Hell, Paso was a great place, I'm the one who recommended it when we at Knotts back in 05, and the Adelaide bent over backwards for us...
So don't get all ruffled up, if your vote is Morro Bay, so be it...
you wil most likely have plenty of company because Morro is a great place, but some others are ready for a change....
i guess my other suggestion of making it the same weekend as Carlyle
was pretty bad also, since it is very cool for some to do both...
OK, I'm glad you figured out stepping on Carisle's toes is a bad idea. That saved me a good long rant.

As to venue, you Left Coasters will do what you will do -- it's all so very cool to me, and I suppose being realistic, I'm not going to be making every one -- unless maybe I move. [Hey Vince: got any room in your basement???] But if my vote DID count, I'd echo the business about the ocean -- I love the ocean, the PCH, and all of that. Big Sur region, Carmel, Monterrey -- what's not to like about that??

I think your 3-month decision time is off by at least three months. Be lucky to settle this by Christmas -- I'm just sayin' . . . Theron will have buy another 5TB hard drive to keep all the posts this will generate.

And just in case you guys get really stupid and completely lose your collective minds, let me just say you'd be well advised to just let Dusty make it happen.
Jen was showing her rack!? Man, I knew it was a bad a idea to do the F1 race instead of Morro!!

I just want to ad that my wife is NOT happy about not going out to the left coast event. I showed her the pics and she said "We could have been there, at those winerys, in that scenery, and we didn't go so you can go to some car race?!". Needless to say I'll have to buy her a tshirt at the race. ;)

I'm just sayin that it doesn't matter where you guys host the event we right coasters are gonna enjoy the change of scenery regardless.
hi,

i'm sorry that i'm not attending these events yet, but showing up in a 98 acura or 08 honda doesn't seem to fit.

the scenery around asilomar is lovely to look at, but parking is scarce, the rooms are bare bones and priced high, and you'll have to talk to the city of pacific grove to park 50 cars downtown for the good food at peppers, zocalo, joe romby's fandango, or the little red house, unless everyone wants to dine at fishwife on asilomar. the big sur marathon happens that weekend, so the journey from the south/southeast may be blocked, or the travel time would be doubled.

the best western at san simeon is a great place to stay, and much closer to morro bay.

One thing to consider is lets not to do anything when school is out, everything is always packed and who wants a bunch of kids around (don't get me wrong I love mine, but need to get away sometime). I asked my Dad his thoughts and he is game for what ever, he won't travel more than about 300 miles (really doesn't want to go further than Morro), he is happy at Morro and doesn't mind staying :-) Also, when deciding please keep in mind those of us with kids (are we the only ones with a kid at home?) September for us does not work.

Thanks guys, so glad you like my rack! :-)
I agree that Morro Bay is a good base, and a longer trip for a 3 day weekend is too much from SoCal. Also, this year the weather was perfect for a run up HWY 1 to Big Sur , but it is not always that nice and warm. Morro is nice because we are by the sea, but can drive on inland roads if the weather is cold by the ocean.
I'm game on September after the kids are back in school. Have no desire whatsoever to mix adult vacation with the ltl ones.
Jenn (Ms Rack) you need that plate on your Tub..! Kids are in school in April and we go. They are back to school in Sept.I'm suggesting a date in Sept after the Labor Day Hoopla & b4 the Turkey/Christmas Hoopla let alone cold weather or worse yet wind.. (I hate wind).
Since your all speaking up here I may as well throw our 1-cent in. About all we'll have left after the Amnesty Program starts!
What is weather up there avg in Sept...? Its a crap shoot for us every year on that date when it comes to weather. Are the rates at all off-season that early after the summer?
I liked where we stayed and I liked the atmosphere there. Short of suggesting swapping with north 1yr and our south the other (alternating) that would be my only other thought.
Certainly enough to do and see in both locations.
Had a great time but one rough ride home in the early a.m. "Blog" we slammed into in Buellton.. !
I'm one of the new guys, and I had a ball in Morro Bay.
There are many things to do around that area. Including
driving up to San Simon and taking the tour of the castle,
as a group. Stopping back in Cambria for lunch, at the
Main Street Grill. (according to Huel Howser) They serve the biggest beef ribs in the State of California. I only order one. Its about 12 inches long, and 4 inches wide. Just a few miles north of San Simon is a beach, right next to the roadway, where you can watch thousands of sean lions - - doing their thing. Our cars were safe at the motel (covered), and everything was within walking distance. As some of you mentioned, Paso Robles was pretty hot
when you visited that area a few years back.
